Hi
I would appreciate any comments advice on a potential issue I have with my new i30.

I really like the car in terms of its driveability, comfort and equipment. However I have noticed a slight noise when turning the steering wheel fairly quickly and substantially whilst stationary or when manoeuvring into a car parking space for example. It is a very slight rubbing type noise and appears to be from the vicinity of the steering column or just whether the steering wheel is attached. .

As I have not owned a Hyundai before or a car with EPS steering I would like your views as to whether it is just the nature of the car particularly as it is new, and whether any of you had heard this or think it might represent a problem that may need to be checked by the dealer.  There is no obvious sound when driving/steering at normal speed.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi and welcome Npmr,

There have been a few mentions of steering noise/problems and a few have had the rack replaced but that was for extreme issues.

I've done a quick search and here is a link to a posting re noise.

https://www.i30ownersclub.com/forum/index.php?topic=4835.msg65080#msg65080

There are others so if you do a search yourself using key words you may find something similar to your noise.

Are you sure it isn't just to electric motor whirling due to the extra strain due to turning the wheels

If not happy or concerned take it back to the dealer for them to check it as safety is paramont.

Hi Npmr

Welcome to our friendly little club

Without doing a search I seem to remember a member a long time ago having a bit of a rubbing or squeaking noise when turning the wheel which went after they sprayed a little bit of Silicon or WD 40 type spray between the steering wheel and the column. Suspect it was just plastic rubbing on plastic.

If it is electrically driven, why does it not work without the engine running?
with the ignition turned on but no engine running mine is like a bus.

:'(Seems the problem is like this. Hopefully not. I took this bad quality video by my phone when my i30cw was only 3 weeks old. I came back to the dealer and ask them to hear it, however, it had no sound no matter how I turned the wheel. Then I drove my car out and leaving. When I was on the way home, stopping at the traffic light, I tested it again. The sound came up again. So I made a u-turn to the dealer immediately. Can you believe ? It made no sound at all again when turning the wheel and showed to the engineer who was by my side. Okay, the conclusion was, I had the noise problem, but they did not hear it at all, there's nothing they can do. Even showed them the video, they still would like to hear that sound "personally", to see is to believe.

Take it to the dealers, that's horrible and NOT normal. They'll probably (at least they should) replace the steering rack. If they don't do anything about it anytime soon, go to next dealer and talk to some of their superiors.

We had a similar sound in our Santa Fe, when it had around 95.000 km and it was due to some bearings in the wheel. But no way it was half that sound (loudness). And it wasn't always present, so I filmed it too and showed them. After they heard, they went into action discovering what was the problem and fixed it under warranty.

Hm, look.. I know a service guy who owns Hyundai service and has been servicing Hyundai vehicles in Slovenia for 18 years now. Ii'll show him the vid and ask him if he knows what could be the problem? Okay?

Okay, so I checked with him. Of course he didn't have much to say before seeing it in person (he said something is rubbing or there's some bigger issue with the rack), but he definitely said, your service should at least open and check it..

So nothing new

Thanks for the replies and comments. Its nice to know this forum is active and welcoming.

Dealer has checked this morning and sound is 'normal' friction and/or EPS whirr. I do feel reassured but I will continue to monitor. I may try the wd40 application as described in previous post!

silicone spray would be better than wd40
