I have a diesel i30, purchased in December 2008.  At that time I was driving to and from work 5 days a week (~650km/week inc small trips).  I've now clocked up just under 93,000.

Mid this year, I've cut back my hours, now working 3 days for home and still travel 2 days a week (now travel ~250km/week inc small trips).

I still have about $8000 to pay on finance.

Is it worth changing over to a petrol model or keep with diesel?  I'm going away over the Christmas/New Year period and driving ~1200km round trip).  That'll be the biggest distance I've driven in one hit.

What is it about petrol that interests you. You have done a considerable distance in your vehicle, which should give you a fair idea of the pros / cons of diesel. My feeling is that petrol, like diesel is only going to get more expensive but :-

1. A tank of diesel will get you further than petrol.
2. Because the engine has more torque, running the air conditioner is less noticeable in a diesel.
3. Diesel lends itself to bio fuel supplement / replacement in the future, although a satisfactory alternative is not available yet, according to the handbook. Who knows what may be offered in the future.
4. A diesel engine can be chip tuned for even more power, (Apparently).

Just a few things to ponder over.

Why take another big hit on depreciation and get a higher loan to pay off when you can sit back and pay off the last 8k on the diesel and be done with the loan altogether?

The only advantage I could see is that the new I30 would be safer, but that's only if your car doesn't have the extra airbags.

I think this is one of those questions you already know the answer to.

Keep it. Petrol will offer nothing over what you have... except a new car. As pointed out, it will cost you.

So it comes down to; will the excitement of a new car be worth the extra money you will need to find to buy it?

I'm of the same opinion as the 6 replies above,and you still have almost 2 years of the warranty left.

a girl i know payed $85,000 for a new Lexus 250??? three years back. she just told me she is going to sell it for $44,000 only has 20,000k up. the car looks perfect too. seems like a big loss to me.

yes i'd say keep the diesel, i've done long trips with the diesel runs sweet all day

If you sell and buy a petrol you will always be making comparisons and may rue the day you changed.

Why don't you test drive/hire a petrol one for a few days and then decide whether you do actually want to sell.

If she drove a manual one she might be tempted (they are a bit sporty) the auto petrol is not my "cup of tea"..
