Last week we signed the papers. Hopefully in the next week we'll take delivery of our first new car for a long time, an SLX i30 6sp manual CRDi.

So, naturally I've been trawling the web to find out everything that I can about this vehicle, and this led me to here.

I'm in country Victoria, Australia, about 2hrs out of Melbourne. So the i30 will see a lot of rural driving, with local commuting, short trips to the shopping centre, freeway driving to Melbourne and so on.

I'm looking forward to see how this turbo diesel will perform both in terms of fuel economy and outright performance.

I've been looking for electronic versions of the owner's handbook, but to no avail. I was hoping to download a copy so I could start familiarising myself with all of its functions, particularly the stereo and how it works with Bluetooth.

Looks like I need to be patient. Hard to do when a new toy is on its way...

Anyway, I hope that I can be a positive contributor to this forum.

My wife drives an auto crdi, a bit harder than I do, on our South Eastern Freeway. It's got plenty of power and it's great to climb a hill or turn on the A/C and the vehicle just keeps on going effortlessly.

Even though the fuel economy is great 6.2l/100 for the auto, I find they are expensive to run BECAUSE WE KEEP DRIVING HERE, THERE & EVERYWHERE IN IT.  Enjoy    :happydance:

Well, the Big Day has, arrived. Yesterday evening, we took delivery of a 2011 i30 SLX, CDRi 6sp manual, color, Hyper Silver.

Having driven a 3sp/overdrive slushmatic for the past 5 years, it is taking a bit of getting used to the 6sp manual. But it's returning quickly (prior to that I owned SS Commodore manuals).

Performance - while it ain't a Clubsport it isn't a slouch either. I'm impressed with its low down grunt and how it can get off the line without having to rev the bags out of it. It gets to 80 kays, then up to 100 kays deceptively quick.

It's fairly quiet too, but as with any low end small car there is the usual road and wind noise but it's no louder than any other car that I've been in.

I love the appointments; storage, entertainment system, safety features, automatic features such as headlight off, fade out interior lights and so on.

The only disappointment is that none of the aux power outlets (formerly called cigarette lighter sockets) have an always on option. This is handy if you want to charge a phone, GPS or whatever without having to leave it on "ACC" or with the engine running. I'd love an APO in the console where I'd be able to hide the GPS and keep it charged. It's what I do with my Mazda Tribute.

The car has a medium grade tint which looks quite good. Hopefully it'll prove its worth during hot, sunny days.

When I first sat in it, I was browsing the dash. The odo read "620 km". What? Where the hell has this been driven, I asked the salesman. You've sold me a used car, I cried.

Turns out that I was looking at "distance to empty"... (odo reading was 23km)

Oops...

We've driven around town and a quick trip at night on the open road to test the headlights. So far, the average fuel consumption is indicating around 8l/100km. In 2hrs time we're going to Melbourne, a 2hr drive on mostly 110 km/h freeway, so I'm looking forward to see how it all comes together.

To be honest, I never thought that I'd be excited to own and drive a Hyundai, after experiencing my daugther's 94 Excel that we bought her for her 18th. But this model or generation of Hyundais is so far ahead of what the marque used to be. Of course, it needs to stand the test of time. What will it be like in 100,000 km? Still, I'm looking forward to finding out...

Today we drove to Melbourne in it. Round trip of around 400 kays.

Some points:

* Cruise control works well. Engine torque allows it to maintain a steady 110 km/h (or 100) up and down hills.
* Fuel economy started off at around 8l and dropped to 5.8l/100 kays by the time we got home. Still got half a tank.
* On trip computer average speed is sitting on around 50 kays. Was sitting on 43 km/h for quite a while. Not sure what is going on there.
* Diesel performance is surprising. Love it, actually. It's not a Clubby, but then I didn't pay $60k+ for it, either.
* Cabin noise is acceptable. Listened to an audio book via BT streaming from an Android phone. Didn't have to have the volume bellowing to listen to it.
* 6 sp manual seems to be well developed, ratios-wise. Action is smooth and positive, light and short throw. Clutch is light and good feedback. I quickly got back into the manual way of things after having to navigate bumper to bumper, stop/start traffic from one side of Melbourne to the other.
* Still getting used to the hatchback form factor, and learning how to deal with the blind spots.
* Seat comfort OK, but could be better.
* Gotta learn how to drive the climate control gizmo. Was copping cold air on my bare arms even when it was 16 degs outside on the way home and I had the temp set to 22 degs. Can't close the vents and vent direction swivel is limited.

Yes, I must say that I'm somewhat pleased with my purchase.

I disabled the auto A/C on function. I like to decide how & when the A/C is used. The manual describes what to do to disable, I forget now.  :'(

Hi Martin :welcome: I also own a diesel I30 and find it very quite. I find the climate control best set around 24 when its below 20 outside and around the 22.5 when its a warmer day. I also dont use the auto function as when I am in traffic I hate the air coming from the exhaust of the car in front. The I30 CW does  have a aux power socket in the boot on the right hand side and this does remain on as I use this for my fridge on my country trips. I have done 75000kms on my car in just over 18mths and while I have had a few issues mostly the drive has been very pleasant.  I am sure you will love your I30 in no time!! Mel  :Drive:

Thanks. Yep, so far I'm enjoying the i30 ownership experience as the buzzwordsmiths would say.

As for the A/C, I am starting to read about it in the manual. Over the past two days I've started reading it from cover to cover and are up to the A/C section.

So far, so good. Over 500 kays now and the fuel tank is down to a quarter with DTE suggesting 180 kays to empty.

Have played with all the settings and explored all the features. Discovered the compliance plate which looks more like a white sticker on the inside of the left door pillar. Tells me that it's an 11/11 build. So, it must've only arrived in the country in the past month or so.

Yep, I think that this'll do us just fine for the next four or so years...

:goodjob2: :goodjob:  and that compliance sticker isn't a sticker you can just peel off,they are stuck good n proper.

The Cruddy (CRDi pronounced) is getting its first "service" on Thursday. Presumably they'll just whack it up on the hoist, shine a torch here and there. Dunno what else that they'd do. No doubt, whatever it is, it'll be minimalistic given that it's "free"...

Passed my first car in it today on the way to work. Doing about 95 kays, dropped back to 5th and planted it. Passed easily. Got up to $1.20 before I backed off to $1.00...

I wouldn't rely on it to pass a long line of vehicles on short stretches, though.

Currently consumption average is 6.0 l/100km. Hopefully that'll improve over time. When I filled up I only reset the trip meter. Presumably the consumption calcs work over time rather than between fills, but not sure. Doesn't really matter. What does is the distance that I get between fills. First one was at 720 kays for 40l.
