I heard on the radio this morning that Perth (Scotland, not Australia) became a city today.
We were told today by a guest on radio that the residents of Perth once killed a monarch and it was decreed that as punishment, the city would never be allowed to attain city status.
However, the Queen has recently lifted the ban hence the new Scottish city as of today.
Not sure of the creedence of that but someone might know.
So now there are two cities in the world called Perth.

That Perth has a population of about 45,000 apparently...

Where we live Devonort in Tassie has only 25,000 now and was declared a city when it got to about 20,000 quite some years ago.

We have a Perth in Tassie but I am guessing that only has a population of 500-1000 people..

I was way out (Wiki says 2239 people)

Wiki has a slightly different slant on it.

    City status
Signage in Perth using the term 'city'

The classic definition of Perth has been as a city, and traditional documentation confirms that this has been true since time immemorial. In the late 1990s, Her Majesty's Government and the Scottish Executive re-examined the definition[18] of a city and produced a list of approved cities, from which Perth was omitted. It was therefore considered to be a "former city", like Brechin and Elgin.

Current road-signs around the borders state "The City of Perth", and directional signs within indicate "City Centre". In June 2007, Alex Salmond, the first Minister of Scotland, backed a campaign to confer city status on Perth, saying it should be granted "at the next commemorative opportunity".[19] The local authority, Perth and Kinross, stated that the 800th anniversary of the city in 2009 should create "a foundation for Perth to bid for formal city status".[20]

Perth was one of the bidders for city status to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012.[21] On the 14th of March 2012, it was announced that the bid was successful and Perth would become the seventh city in Scotland. [22]

But the monarch killing story appears correct.

King James I of Scotland was assassinated in Perth in 1437, by followers of the Earl of Atholl at Blackfriars church
Now we just need Brian to give us the "local's" view on it all.

You don't want to upset an angry Scotsman. They didn't muck around with the assassins. Here's what they did to them.  :faint: :faint: :faint:

"They were attainted and put to death in Edinburgh by a series of tortures remarkable and hideous even for that era.

The leader of the assassins, Walter Stewart, Earl of Atholl, was tortured over a period of three days. On the first, he was put in a cart with a crane, hoisted up, dropped, and jerked violently to a stop to stretch his joints. He was then placed in a pillory and "crowned with a diadem of burning iron" bearing the inscription "King of all Traitors".

On the second day, he was bound to a hurdle and dragged along the high street of Edinburgh. (Some claim he was also blinded and tortured with red-hot iron pincers on this day, but Buchanan speaks only of the hurdle.)

On the third, he was disembowelled while alive, his entrails burnt before his face, and his heart was torn out and burnt. Finally, his corpse was beheaded and quartered, and the quarters displayed around the realm."

Ah yes, but the great equalizer has come to all of them, hasn't it. I wonder how they have justified their actions to the creator.  :scared:
