I am curious to know the parameters that get the diesel catalytic converter to kick in - and out. For how long (in time or in distance) does the cleaning process run? Does it relate to engine temperature, to distance driven since last, or what? I notice its substantial impact on fuel mileage.

Can I aid the process by changing driving patterne while it is cleaning and thus gain better fuel economy?

Hej Nils

I believe you mean th DPF - Diesel Particulate Filter..?

If you know when it regenerates you can keep the rpm over 2000 for about 10 km, that usually works for me.

If possible, don't turn off the engine when regenerating, it will try again next time the engine have reached the operating temperature.

Alanho posted a good description of how it works, I'll see if i can find it.

Here you are: :link: A Summary of the DPF system (European cars only)
