The Taiwanese military have landed various craft on a motorway in an exercise simulating an attack on the country's airfields

Various sections of the island's motorways are designed to be used as runways at short notice.

Our Royal Flying Doctor aircraft land on highways all the time.
The police sometimes have to get there first and remove the gyide posts from the side of the road, otherwise they're straight in & out.

Our island is too small, some sections of the motorways need to be used as runways if necessary. In those sections, the central barriers on the motorways are removable. ;)

It's the same in Singapore.

Many years ago, back in the dreamtime, I used to be in the Police airwing and when flying around in rural W.A. (we had a civilian pilot) we sometimes had to land on roads, in paddocks, on gravel airstrips, you name it.
I remember this one time when landing on a gravel strip near the Old Coast Road south of Mandurah, just as the plane touched the ground, a cow wandered out in front of us. Power up, up again and another circuit before trying again.
We had kangaroos hinder landings as well from time to time.
One of the nicest flights I did was down the coast from Dongara to Geraldton just on sunset, following the beach down at low altitude. Just beautiful.
Well, it was until my partner asked if he could have a go at landing the plane and the pilot said yes.
He hadn't done it before and it was a rather bumpy end to a sensational (albeit short) flight.
I also remember embarrassing myself when we were flying around in ever dcreasing circles in the hills behind Harvey in the south-west, looking for a drug crop that we knew was there somewhere. I got quite ill after going around and around for an hour or so.

And if the prop had hit it, it would have been all chopped up and ready to go.

I was on a commercial flight into Townsville Airport one time back in the late 90's and we had to do a (very) last minute pull up and go around because a wallaby hopped onto the runway just as we were about to touch down.

THAT was fun. :scared: :faint:

Runways?  Real pilots don't need runways.

Just today I landed in a car park.  Last night it was beside a lake.  I have had to chase off wildlife from landing areas though.

Here are some photos of some recent landings that I have done.  The first two landings were charter flights, the last one was for a patient recovery from the Overland Track in the Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park.

Not a runway at Gordon Power Station, Tasmania.

Another, not a runway at Cape Barren Island, Tasmania.

It was much bigger and not moving, and the aircraft much smaller, than what I used to land on in a previous life!!

Actually landing on a Motorway is not new.   As Surferdude said..In Singapore the dual carriageway leading into the Airport can be used as an emergency runway if airport runways are busy and an aircraft has to land urgently.  They create the runway by removing all the street furniture  (Big Trees in tubs, light poles, bollards etc.)  The conversion can be completed in 30 minutes.

Our cab driver in Singa told us that, I believed him, the Singapore folk are pretty clever.   Must be the Tiger Beer.

Just a bit of Asian Trivia.
