The new Corolla will start at $19990 (Auto adds 2k) and fixed servicing will be $130 (service intervals 10k).

Toyota still gets the crappy 3/100k warranty and the servicing is only until 60k

Expect some pencil sharpening on the Hyundai range.

Good point Beerman.. :goodjob:

Maybe I can hang off a little before upgrading and see what happens..... :whistler:

Somehow I think that the overall bebefits of the I30 will hold the price "as is"...maybe with a few extras thrown in as a sweetener...

Lets see what the marketing boys do...

The 'price' might stay as is, because they wont want to annoy anyone. But I think if you walk into the dealers the petrol manual will be $19990 and the auto $21990.

BUt toyota has 'reliability' and a 'renowned name' on their side. I never thought Toyota's were any more reliable than other brands but it seems very hard to change people's opinions on this.

IF the Corolla is indeed cheaper then Hyundai need to make some price adjustments.

Yes, they should, or offer other incentives like very cheap servicing.
The Hyundais we buy are only priced the way they are because they are "positioned" against the opposition.
The pricing is not truly reflective of production cost, hence being able to offer the same cars for considerably less in other foreign markets.

Yes they do, how many Toyotas was it on the first major recall? You know the one they hid for a year where the cars wanted to accelerate on their own, millions if I recall correctly  I seem to recall the recent window switch one was in the millions as well....That's the kind of quality you want backed by a 3/100 warranty!

I think with Mitsubishi lowering the price of the Lancer, and Toyota hitting $19990 they would be foolish not to at least follow to that mark....

Yeah funny thing is - even after the massive recall - people still think toyota's are reliable - Completely oblivious to that....Surprises me all the time! THis is why i said 'it is hard to change people's minds'......

To be fair, the amount of affected cars (those actually with a problem) in relation to the number of Toyotas on the road is pretty small. I have a lot of experience with Toyotas in our family and they have been by far the most reliable brand I've ever owned. The Hyundai is a relative newcomer and looking good up to this point.

It's possible for any car to have a recall, even upmarket brands. What determines a good brand from a bad brand is how many recalls over what time period and the severity of the problem.

The Toyota acceleration problem certainly was a serious problem for truly affected vehicles, which is why Toyota recalled so many. I would be more comfortable with that action than a company trying to minimise damage to their image, by taking chances with people's safety.
All brands have recalls periodically.

Problem is they knew about the serious problem for a year, and tried to hide it. They only did the recall when found out.....Hence why they were so many Toyota executives bowing so low because it was an example of a company doing the exact opposite of what you said above. The Ford Territory ball joint issue would be another example of a company doing their best to ignore a problem, letting those trusting souls or those who think they can't fight a big company pay for the poor design of a vehicle, whilst quietly fixing the vehicles of those who make enough noise.

Value is relative, and I have criticised Holden and Ford for not having the guts to offer a 5/unlimited warranty. To me it says that the company does not have the faith in their vehicles to back them. Toyota is in the same boat, sure they have the reputation of being reliable, but they won't put their money where their mouth is.  There may be a few small issues with the I30, but I know that if I'm unlucky enough for the auto to go at 4 years and 10 months, that it will be fixed.  Try doing that in most other cars.

@Beerman

Part A - Didn't know that about Toyota, had heard about the Territory problem.  :fum:

Part B - Agree 100% It was a major reason why we went for this brand as there is still a lot of querying looks when people find out we went Korean. So far my experience has been nothing but positive with regard to reliability and servicing. I'm happy with that. :goodjob2:

I don't believe Hyundai will want to drop the price as they have been trying to get away from the cheap and cheerful reputation that they have been known for..... :undecided:

Will be interesting, with Toyota taking it there, they may have to. It may not be getting away from being cheap and cheerful, it might be avoiding looking expensive.

I don't think they would want to be canned in a head to head for being too expensive.

I think the i40 Sedan is too dear at the moment (in Australia) compared with the Japanese and Korean competition :disapp:

Is there still a 3 month wait? Anytime you have to wait for a car, you better believe that is going to cost you.

The I30 is their bulk seller, so I'm guessing both they and the dealers won't want to drop too many units per month.
