Interesting reading.
I wonder why they specifically chose the petrol engined i30?
The Camry Hybrid gets a good write up.  :)

If you go to the link and then click on "details" then click on scoresheet you will see the Diesel comes a close 2nd..

Interesting to see the ratings for the competition in the i30 class and the Hybrid class

They've marked the diesel down for resale and performance over the petrol?  :undecided:

they rated my hybrid lower for value than the i40 active sedan but I reckon at what I paid it would be the other way around ... I guess they are comparing the resale price versus purchase price (the Diesel is $2600 dearer to buy and you only get about half that back at trade in time, if you are lucky)  :winker:

Not from what I have seen.

The current batch of petrol I30s are getting smashed resale wise.

The petrol are selling more than the diesel, but the diesel are what the punters want to buy second hand.

That said, the economy difference is reduced in the new model.

P.s did the Corolla get disqualified for copying the Hyundai's rear end?

I find it interesting that they give the diesel in the Polo a great wrap when, when you compare it to the Hyundai i30 diesel, it all seems a bit ordinary...  :undecided:

Volkswagen are amongst the best in the world when it comes to diesel engine technology, and powering the Polo66TDI Comfortline is a 1.6Litre turbocharged diesel engine delivering 66kW of power and, 230Nm of engine torque. The engine’s torque builds from low engine RPM levels, making it one of the best performers in this class. If you need to overtake or pass another vehicle the 1.6 litre turbo diesel engine spins up sweetly without becoming breathless and noisy and it’s definitely no slouch out on the open road. All this performance doesn’t come at a cost at the bowser and the fuel consumption for this engine is a standout as well. The Polo’s diesel engine is matched to a slick shifting five-speed manual transmission, and for an additional $2,500 there’s an excellent seven-speed automatic DSG available.

Keeping VW on the top podium is normal in the Euro motoring press - but I didn't know that the disease had spread to Australia.

I am surprised to see the VW Polo included as a sports car.

Gee, you are right  I quite like the look of the new corolla (that explains why)  :whistler:

It was rated in a different class (Light class... below the i30) so they don't see it as a direct competitor

Yep, but they have the same capacity engine so I still think it's fair to compare.....  :undecided:
The Ford Fiesta diesel puts out even less torque than the Polo....

Actually, the Accent is in that class, the diesel in that would eat the Polo & Fiesta for breakfast.....

You are preaching to the converted Rusty...

I think the awards are reasonably accurate (I would)  :snigger:

The sizing is a bit weird though, because the Camry is classed as a medium car and the Aurion as a large one and yet they are the same size and even similar performance (Hybrid V Aurion)

I think it's pretty funny actually that Toyota now find it necessary to copy a Korean design and looking at those rear lights on the Corolla I can't see any other explanation.

Out of curiosity I have visited the Australian Toyota site to look at the Corolla rear end. I cannot see much in common with the i30 - or are we referring to another car.  Frankly I don't like the styling of the Corolla one bit - bland and disjointed. We don't get them in the UK - we get an ugly bug called the Auris.

Most current hatchbacks follow similar lines - I think that there is similarity between the i30 and Mazda 3. it must be very difficult to be radically different from the herd on such a small canvas.

I tend to agree with your comments generally, Alan, but I do still think there is more than a passing resemblance to the rear end of the GD i30 in the new Corolla.
By contrast, the FD i30 was quite the individual, although many said it bore a great resemblance to the BMW 1 Series.

Really?
I'm not saying they are identical. I'm saying they are remarkably similar and I still think that.
When you look at the previous Corolla styling, I don't see this as a progression. I see it as copying Hyundai but then that's just me.  :)
The Hyundai styling is still more attractive IMNSHO.  ;)

I agree that the back of the i30 is nicer and more integrated and there is a definite similarity in the tail lights but if you try you can find more differences than similarities  :whistler:

Corolla appears to have a two piece tailgate, The i30 has obvious fog lights and  a bigger spoiler, Back window shape is a lot different, Corolla has that black insert in the bumper & i30 doesn't...

OK, point taken. I've been beaten down.  :disapp:
I just know that when I saw the new Corolla (in white) being driven down Adelaide Terrace in the Perth CBD, I thought immediately, "Is that a new i30?  :undecided: Oh no, it's the new Corolla."

What comes around, goes around. I used to sometimes get confused when I saw what I thought was an i30 in the distance - only to catch up with it and find it was a Fiat Punto.

Did Hyundai copy the rear lights?

I don't know if it's ageing or just different times, but in the 70's & 80's car manufacturers didn't copy each other like the do now. I liked it better that way  :(
