Well a few in here have mentioned they are around 6.2", my friend just got a new old stock FD CRDi 6 speed, he told me the seat needs to be 1 inch back & spaced up & he has to drive in his socks. ( that socks )
he just moved from a Mercedies Vito Van, so i think seating possition in the van totally different to the i30, but i had no problems going from trucks or Vans then into the i30. but i know if you have driven one type of seating possition ( upright ) for a long term then go to sit down legs forward, can feel a lot different. i thought he was 6'6" but he said once when i said that " i'm not that tall i'm only about 6'2", but he looks taller than 6'2" to me.
i told him about the pump up feature of the base of the seat, as his concern was if he spaced it up would he upset the side airbags. i also said i don't care for the type of pump up base they use as i was used to the Falcon i had before that had an electric base adjustment. that allowed the front or rear of seat to rise or the whole seat to rise. where as the i30 FD base just seems to rise at the rear and tilts you forward.
anyway all you tall lad's hope you can give some advice for me to forward him. as he has been a very close friend for years & it's my falt he got the i30.
also he is a British Lad that has never turned Aussie
cheers

Maybe he is all legs John  :undecided: Is it his legs or his arms that are cramped? Some tall people are long in the legs and some are long in the body..

Are you saying he is a whinging Pom?  :snigger:

think he is legs and arms Dazz, he is not what i'd call a whinging pom, he has high standards, think he has stooped to a lower standard moving to the i30. myself i don't have any set standards, i just want something that does the job & the motor is everything. my friend is a very good ( Fast ) driver also a good rider.
he had a friend that lives a few streets away from him that had a penchant for Jag's & was a member of a Jag car club. this guy had a nice Black two door convertable V12 jag sports but don't ask me what it is as i'm not up to date on old Jag's but it's not an E Type, the only Jags i like are D type &  E type. anyway the owner & friend who owned this Jag had a terminal illness he could no longer drive the Jag so he loved my friend driving him in it, as said no one else could drive it like my friend could, he had members of the Jag car club drive him but they could not drive it like him. I said he knew he did not have long & might have just wanted you to go with him. well he refused treatment so passed away, sad but think in same situation i would do the same.

i wonder if you could move the seat back an inch? my friend looks nothing like those North Korean Goose steppers.
Cheers
ps after thinkink about it, even though he has long legs and arms his body is normal for his hight, formidable looking lad.

That can happen as he only drove mine a relitivly short distance, thats why i say test drive a lot before you buy a car. but that's not going to help, need to find out how we could modify the base mount to move it back an inch they do that with race cars i suppose could be done, anyone know?

Too bad for any rear seat passengers, if you do that.  :undecided:

he does not have to worry about rear seat passengers, as his family grown up & wife has a car.
Infact if he had the money he would have a new two door sports car but would need a spare 6 figer amount & enough to keep it serviced. so took this as $20,000 has factory mags 5 year warranty u2 CRDi 6 speed

Should be possible to have the seat moved and an inch won't impede on back seat legroom that much. But not sure who would do it safely  :undecided:

Surely the runners have to be bolted to the floor (not going out into the garage to look right now) and it should be a simple matter of re-drilling the holes, making sure the airbag connections are still unimpeded.

Lester, i showed him how the steering wheel adjusts, he did not mention his legs touching the steering wheel just felt cramped, he has arthritic knee too. not sure what the problem, just thinks he needs seat back an inch.

Thanks Trev, just remembered another friend builds speedway Sprint Cars & always mounting seats for different size drivers, the good thing is this same guys son drives an FD CRDi 5 speed so i'll ask him to look & see if he thinks he could do it, he is a top tradesman.

thanks all

This issue has come up before,Can't remember who brought it up,I'm six two and a half and I have absolutely no trouble, sometimes I even feel i have to bring the seat forward, when doing a lot of city driving with multiple gear changes required,I have the seat right back(this makes me reach to get to the end of the clutch travel)and at almost it's lowest point,I have the steering wheel pulled right back and almost to it's bottom point on it's adjustment,I have never felt cramped,on long runs with cruise on I have my right foot resting on a ledge on the sill just under the hood release, the other either on the foot rest or in-between the clutch and brake pedal stretched out, around town I just drive normally, again never an issue.

You can go to an engineering company and have seat block spacers made,I had some made some years ago for a Nissan and a Mini to get the seat further back, but even though well engineered I would look at the legality of these devices,by changing the range the seat will travel, your Friend will be putting himself outside the safe optimal position for the side air bags,I researched five different smaller cars for nine months, never drove any of them more than a few kilometres,it always came back to the I30 as value for money, warranty and what you actually got for your money,we were that impressed with the I30's we bought two.

I hope your Friend finds his solution, like you said he looks more than six two, maybe he is,I can only relate my experiences with these great little cars, again I have absolutely no issues with driving position.

In my GD i30 the side airbags are mounted within the seat - so it matters not a jot how far back or forward the seat goes.

Surely the same applies to the FD

at 6ft 4 1/2inches (195cm) in my Trophy and now premium{and with long legs) , I was surprised at how well I had a good driving position and also was comfortable for driving long distance. I hope this helps

Both mine also have the side air bags in the front and centre columns, without looking I also think there is one in the roof sill(but the last one I will have to check on) pretty sure a total of eight if not ten air bags

Thanks Rick & Thanks Neptune, much apreciated.

I've never had an airbag activate on any car i've owned or driven, but good to have it & not need it than the other way.
one of my nephews was a ambo then a parramedic before moving on. he told me he saw people get broken arms & burns from air bags activating . so at that time was unsure on there real worth. but then had to attend a fatal accident, two identical cars, one came with air bags the other without ( was when you had a choice ) these two cars had a head on. the driver with air bag walked away. the driver with out died. from that day on my nephew changed cars to a higher safty standard, not from fear, but as he has a wife & young family.

There ya go checked today,I have twelve air bags in Bruce and Cyril and as far as the statement I highlighted,I would be very concerned about moving my seat further back, as at the point I sit now with the seat right back(at the manufacturers rearward point) the air bag in the centre column is right next to my Right Lug Hol,well lets say I hope it never goes off accidently,it'll take my Bleedin head off.

Yes I know they are a safety feature, but I too have heard of the broken faces, thumbs, arms but at least all the PPL are still here to tell the story, wish I had full body air bags back in 1976,maybe I wouldn't have the health issues I have today.

Hey Rick i looked in mine & 6 air bags, they come out hot & can burn you too ( so i'm told ) those blocks to mount seat back sound like the best do the mount where seat mounts then you bolt seat to them only & inch back ( i don't know why he told me an inch he must still be going a country mile.
& thanks all for your suggestions & help will relay to him.
