Hi everyone! I'm a brand new member although I have had my i30 for two years.

Shortly after purchasing the vehicle from a reputable dealer, I noticed the ESP notification was illuminated. I took it into the authorized garage and they put it right with no further trouble as part of the servicing I was having done at the time. It lit up again on various INFREQUENT occasions and turned itself off after a short while.

Now it has started again and is staying on. I need to know:
1. Is this something I need to pay attention to - immediately and urgently - or can it be ignored?
2. What exactly does it signify?
3. Can I de-activate this (correctly) myself and if so, how?

It seems a bit trivial to book an appointment at Hyundai's and then wait a couple of hours for them to do something that possibly I can do correctly, safely and efficiently, myself.

1. No it should not be ignored
2. It signifies that your stability system is trying to tell you something
3. Get your tyre pressures checked

Nice you joined us, even after 2 years, 

The ESP is a stability program the car uses to take control should the rear wheels loose grip and the car starts to spin. This can be a result of icy roads or emergency accident avoidance, a very handy feature. I would never turn this safety feature off. The ESP light can come on if your tyre pressures are uneven. Have them checked, many members here use pressures of 36-38 psi or 250-260 Kpa. Try that , if the light continues to come on you should return to Hyundai and have them check it thoroughly.

along with all the good info you have been given so far,the ESP light problem can also be linked to a faulty brake light switch,which has been highly discussed under another ESP light thread, it is also well documented by many Hyundai dealers(here in Aust anyhow)but they do not tend to fix it until you moan and bitch about it,I had almost indentical symtoms(well one of my I30's did) had the brake light switch changed has happened since.

Ours had this problem just prior to 30,000 km service. We are now waiting for a part to fix it and our cruise control has been disabled.

I ad the same problem with the ESP off warning.  The odd occurrences were recorded in the car's data logger.  The agency's computer analyst fixed it in no time. 
p.s. : another car had this problem fixed at the same time.

The same thing happened with my car only a few weeks back. It was the brake light switch. If the car is still under warranty then take it back to the dealer and get them to change it. Its a common fault and they will be well aware of it.

I had the brake light switch (and another issue) dealt with outside the warranty because they were safety issues.  I believed they were safety issues and therefore not a warranty, but rather a safety recall issue.  The dealer followed this up with Hyundai (Australia) and it was given the Ok.
