The Road Safety Committee tabled its "Inquiry Into Motorcycle Safety" report in the Victorian Parliament on 12th December 2012...

The Victorian Government is now required to table a response within six months so it will be interesting to see what happens... :undecided:

Just being jocular, Rusty, they wouldn't do that.
But they would tax them more....

They wouldn't just come out and ban them, I'm sure....but they can discourage their use and tax them heavily until they are no longer a viable proposition. A ban by stealth..... :fum:

Years back VicRoads got their bum kicked because they admitted at another motorcycle safety enquiry that their policy was to do nothing that would encourage the use of motorcycles.

I had a quick glance down the recommendations and it left me somewhat confused.

There is a clear recommendation to cancel the Motorbike Safety Levy - whatever that is. But this is followed by various recommendations on how to spend it!!!

How can you spend what no longer exists?

It makes for heavy reading - but I see they have addressed the thorny subject of steel rope barriers and other types.

The safety levy is a tax tacked on to yearly motorcycle registration and is used (amongst other things} to fix roads that are hazardous to motorcyclists. It is also used by the Transport Accident Commission to make those "anti motorcycling"? ads that I've posted in other threads. It is currently around $70 a year....

How can you spend what no longer exists?

I guess they are suggesting recommendations to be implemented in the more than likely event that the TAC levy is not removed.

It makes for heavy reading - but I see they have addressed the thorny subject of steel rope barriers and other types.

I haven't read it all myself yet....
It will be interesting to see if the government takes this up though as they have been pretty much in denial ever since they have been trotting these barriers out as to them being majorly dangerous to motorcyclists.

Your problem is you're thinking logically, Steve... :whistler:

As we all know, logic and Government aren't 2 words we often see together...

The official response to the 2012 Parliamentary Inquiry into Motorcycle Safety has been tabled, with a mixed response from the Victorian government.

The motorcycle safety levy will be retained in Victoria, with the ruling Coalition government not adopting the recommendation from last year’s Parliamentary Inquiry into Motorcycle Safety (PIMS) to abolish it.

However, the government has flagged its intention to allow motorcycles to "filter" through traffic gaps.

The PIMS report made 64 recommendations, with 16 supported by the government, 26 receiving ‘in principle’ backing, six ‘in part’ backing, and 15 rejected.

Typical Government Policy Aust wide I think, is to do nothing to encourage anything they don't want us to do, but they will reap the benefits of the extra taxes they charge us on those things they do not want us to do
