Position for GPS
March 29, 2013, 07:22:08
I have read posts here where there has been some suggestions about mounting GPS on the Radio face or where it obstructs instruments. Well my setup works fine for me. I fixed the GPS (Garmin) mount with two screws to a piece of ply that fits snug in the tray in the middle of the dash (this destroys the mounts ability to be used as a suction device). I then removed the mat in the tray and fixed two strips of adhesive velcro inside on the floor of the tray. Then two strips of adhesive velcro to the underside of the ply with mount fixed. The GPS attached to the mount then sits firmly (held by velcro) where you can see it and it does not stop your view of any instruments. The cover or lid of the tray is naturally raised when the GPS is used and to some extent it protects the GPS from direct sun. As I see it this tray was designed just for this purpose.
Will take some photos and attach them tomorrow if anyone interested

I did the same thing with mine
here
but without doing any damage to the car or the GPS unit (not even sticky velcro strips). Looking forward to the shots.

Yes, those shots go straight to the sealed section.

Just took a quick, not so good, photo. There is no damage to the i30 as one can remove the velcro if you are not happy with the setup. You would however need to purchase a new GPS mount as one destroys it when putting two holes in it to attach it to the ply. I suppose if I were bright I could have used, instead of ply, a piece of metal or plastic that the suction pad would have held on to. Cannot post the picture as it is too large. Will need to find out how to reduce the JPG file to 50kb

Host the photo on a hosting site such as Photobucket and then just post the link...
