Congratulations to the Leyland P76 for 1st place in the Peking to Paris Rally.

"And to the people at Leyland Australia, who once again have proved to the world what a great car they produced 40 years ago."

Long live the P76:   :goodjob2:

I was at the dinner in Canberra when this news was announced.

All sorts of cars including Porsche, Merc 450 SLC, Merc 280, even an HQ ute with a 350 Chev.
It's a pretty good achievement.

Here's a pic of Gerry Brown (on the right) and Allan Lawson, winner of the most recent (26th) Endeavour Rally.

Gerry is 81. Allan turns 80 shortly.

Posted by his family on Australian Rally History.

A couple of Pre-1990 models here: What a great year for the old fella's. Gerry Crown at 81 won the Peking to Paris and Allan Lawson, turning 80 next week just finished, and won the 26th annual Great Endeavour Rally. Nothing easy about that let me tell you. 10-14 hours a day in the car, country and conditions that the Wynns Safari would have tackled and in a 2wd. Well done Allan and I can only hope I have a few of those genes, so I too can be rallying through the scrub at 80.

Allan is a former rally driver and Director of such major events as the Southern Cross Rally. He comes form Toowoomba.

they are mechanically beautiful Dave. a good friend of mine who was a good mechanic, had one in his collection along with a mustang & a chevy with a big block 454. used to tell me how well the v8 4 speed manual performed. it was to sports model was darl metallic blue & silver strips i think? with mags from the factory.
they remind me of the last of the mitubishi magnas or what ever?? made in australia & the last chance both probably good cars but the public did not think they were cool

I guess Lakes Means the Mitsubishi 380 in his post above.  I've often thought the same thing.

But in both cases I think the problem wasn't the acceptance or otherwise, by the Australian public, but the fact that both were produced at the effective end of their makers' manufacturing life in Australia.

They never had a chance to show their true potential.

No matter how good a car is, shutting up shop and leaving the country does tend to stuff the reputation a bit. Amazing to see what the public were being offered by manufacturers then and the shape of vehicles today.

A work colleague had a v8 p76, and while it had build issues, the size was just great to lavish in, plenty of punch in the engine and better handling than the other 3 at the time. Unfortunately, if Leyland were still here, they'd be pushing out small cars too.

Yes, maybe it is better that they only made 18,000 in '73/74 but it is good that they are being recognized now for what they were - way ahead of anything that Holden, Ford or Chrysler had to offer.
And I'd never knock Holden, Ford or Chrysler, I own/have owned all, but the Leyland was ahead of them all, with the exception of the six cylinder engine which was too small for Australia.
