Exactly how reliable is the figure on that little yellow fuel-consumption sticker?

It is probably the first thing car owners do after parking their shiny new purchase in the driveway: peel that garish yellow sticker off the windscreen and throw it away, never to be thought of again.

Yet the fuel-consumption label affixed to every new car sold in Australia is about the only reliable piece of data new-vehicle buyers have to compare one car against another out of the thousands available for sale.

I was slack I meant to share that, but hadn't got around to it yet.

I think a lot of i30 owners are getting closer to the sticker figures than they did with those 3 cars (and I am with the Hybrid too)  :happydance:

There is a lot of disquiet on another forum I frequent about the "woeful" consumption of the i40 CRDi in comparison with the claimed figures.

Most of them suggest that they are getting 7-10% less than Hyundai's claims and think that is terrible, I can't make my mind up about the figures they are getting, whilst 10% sounds a lot, I don't think that Hyundai/Kia are alone, I have friends with C Class Mercs with the official claim being 31mpg urban but who in real terms only get 28 at best, so that is around 10% too :undecided:

Yes Brian I agree.. Mine is about 10% higher than the quoted figure but still got to be happy with 5.7 average (close to 50 Mpg)

I've been averaging between 5.1 and 5.3 l/100 kms in my GD over its first 30,000 kms but when it went in for service the battery was disconnected and the computer reset.
It's already sitting on 5.1 again with around town driving since Wednesday, so I'm happy with that.
It is definitely better than my previous FD in that regard.

Firstly I'm Peeved I didn't get a yellow sticker on either of my two,but with Cyril I'm am regularly getting 5.1 to 5.3 combined City /Hwy,Bruce is a little less @ 4.8 to 5 combines, haven't really worked it out With Cyril as he doesn't have the trip computer, but if I spend a whole day in Perth running around just city driving,he goes down to between 3.8 to 4.3,which seemed a little odd to me,but that is what the trip computer is telling me.

If people are able to get figures only 10 % under what's promised, then it's very good..

Most people don't have the driving style or conditions to achieve the promised figures, which is out of a lab test.

In AU, the fuel consumption figure is derived from a simulation as documented here: https://www.i30ownersclub.com/forum/index.php?topic=19926.0

I'd be amazed if anyone could routinely and reliably match these synthetic figures on the road with resorting to full time "economy" driving techniques.

Just a point of clarification, in Australia they aren't Hyundai "claimed" figures, but tested figures conducted in a lab according to Australian Design Rules.

They have to be there on the new car, Rick. Have done for years.
But a lot of dealerships peel them off before delivery.

I must look a little harder,I have a hobby of browsing through car yards(just because I can) both secondhand and New car yards,I realise the secondhandies would not have the stickers, but I can honestly say I have Never seen one of these stickers on any of the cars I have ever looked at,maybe I'm blind

Told you I was observant,I have seen them stickers but a bit like instruction books to me,who reads the F*#^ers, that is the dealership I bought Cyril from, that google map is at least two years old, because when you look around the backstreet you see a Harry Dutton dealership, that was Melville Hyundias storeage shed,,thats the building I went into to measure up the nudge bar on Cyril to make the light bar for him,the melville showroom looks nothing like that anymore.I wouldn't deal with that dealership again.

Must admit I pretty much ignore them too...unless I'm having trouble working out whether the car I'm looking at has the diesel fitted. One glance at the figures soon tells me...  :D
