Back not long after I started with Goodyear, a young 14 y/o kid used to come and stay with his sister who was my Service Manager at Kedron store. He's ride his skateboard on our courtyard and was pretty much a typical 14 y/o country kid (from Grafton). A bit cheeky. I asked could I have a go on his skateboard one day and you should have seen his eyes light up - expecting blood. But I had been making my own when I was his age - from a piece of fence paling and two halves of a strap on skate. To his credit, he acknowledged my ability. A yaer or so later I got him an apprenticeship with Goodyear. Later he helped me work on my car, then ran service for me with his brother in law. Then I took him along as a navigator - that's him in the orange helmet in my avatar pic. He went on to some considerable success in Goodyear, went out into the dealer world and eventually bought into his own business which he still has.
I still think of him as a young man - he turned 50 a few months ago.
This is him in the Nissan 240 he bought from New Zealand earlier this year, competing in the "Classics" section of Rally Australia last weekend.
Well done, John. I'm proud to know you.
He has been Qld Rally Champion and spent some time driving with the Holden Precision Driving Team.
I feel old.
