The car is 4 years old, so the battery could be on the way out. Had a very similar situation with my son's car. The battery would crank, but not enough energy to fire the spark plugs. Come back later in the day when warmer and it fired 1st go. :fum:

If you can, try a jumper start with a known good battery, if it fires, it's most likely the battery.

I had a similar problem, turning but not firing. Bought a new charger as my old one was not upto the job with a modern battery. After charging it for 12 hours it started the car again, reluctantly.

I bought a new battery, assuming that the old one was on its way out - but the original one is still working fairly well - always starts first time but not quite as quickly as it used to do.

New battery is kept in the boot just in case. :)

If battery ok after testing then how about fuel starvation?

Have you allowed the fuel to drop to nearly empty so drew up muck from bottom of the tank.

May be blocked filter or fuel pump not working correctly.

A bit left of centre but I thought "immobiliser"....

The lad had been sat for a while listening to music so key was in, probably in accessories position.
Now I've never tried it, but I know my doors auto lock, so the immobiliser may have been activated as well initially.... Just a thought.

The battery have to be in good condition to start the car.

Today's modern cars needs around 11-11,5 Volt before the electronics will allow the car to start.

That also explains why the car would start after a while not using the radio.

By the way:

Concerning low fuel in tank and picking up dirt, The fuel pick up is on the bottom of the tank so I would think that if there was dirt in the tank it wouldn't matter how much fuel was there  it would get sucked into the system

What is the level of fuel in the tank

If there is water contamination, empty a litre of methylated spirits into the tank now and run the car until almost empty. The meths will emulsify any water into the petrol and allow it to be burnt, then fill the tank with fresh petrol from a known good source.

It is good practice to do this every 6 months to keep water out of your tank.

NEVER DO THIS TO A DIESEL FUELED CAR

Never ever heard of that before.

How effective is it?

Water condenses from atmosphere over time and sits in a pool at the bottom of your tank. The fuel uptake pipe is slightly above the floor of the tank so as not to suck up sediment. If water collects it will become apparent when it interferes with normal petrol uptake. Symptoms can be stuttering whilst driving at any speed due to pulses of water injected as fuel etc, or difficult starting. Constant water will eventually cause rust flakes and even a hole with leaking fuel.

It can be a common event in our outback, as overnight temps are quite low, due to low humidity.

Suggest you mix some in a glass to see the result for yourself.

IIRC Metho is higher octane than petrol, so no damage can be caused to your engine, especially in that ratio.

In Oz, we buy E10 fuel which is 10% Ethanol at the pump. Anyone who uses a tank of that each month or so, will never have a water issue in their tank.

I used to do that with my Old Holden Barina, Phil.....but, a litre of metho seems way to much to me.  :undecided:

My car ran like a dog after I added a couple of cupfuls which only came good once I manage to get to the nearest servo to fill the tank.

Don't know what the Barina holds, but if you filled with e10, and they can run ok on that, you would have added 4.5 litres of ethanol in a 45 litre tank. That is much more than the 1 litre I was suggesting.

I think from memory it was a 40 litre tank. E10 was actually a no no in the Barina....

Not sure what else could have caused it to cough and splutter like it did other than the metho as it was ok before and ok after I filled the tank.  :undecided:

I'm surprised the Barina was excluded.

I have read that sometimes there are rubber or other components that are incompatible with long term usage, but the engine should still have run ok being a modern car ,my old 93 Commodore loves it. :Dunno:
