This morning on the way to work, when going fairly slow, I noticed a strange noise coming from the back.  It's not very loud and sounds like the car is dragging a small branch covered in dry leaves (which it isn't).

Any ideas?

Hi Craig,

Welcome to the club. 

I would have a good look around the car before you go home, and then have a good listen for it again.  These types of things can be quite frustrating to find, but hopefully it will be something like a small branch covered in dry leaves.  Have a good look under the car, there may be something wrapped around an axle.

How old is your car?  Could it be a bit of dust on your brakes?  Hand brake slightly grabbing?  Have you noticed increased fuel consumption?

Good to see someone (relatively) local on here.

I have had a couple of looks and don't see anything yet but I'll look again at lunch time.

The car is a 2010 and I've had it for two weeks.  It's an auto so I basically don't use the handbrake.   The noise seemed to start on the way in this morning, maybe after going over some rough ground.  I hope it's not a weird-sounding suspension squeak.

Are all your windows completely closed. Sounds a bit like road noise creeping in.

Hmm, it did happen right after I dropped off two passengers.  It's not like any road noise I've heard, unless it's very small stones hitting somewhere.  I'll check that out at lunch too, thanks.

Is it stones caught up in the tyre grooves clicking as the tyre rotates?

Check the plastic cover that covers the shock/springs as i found on my car they do move and sometimes cause a noise

It definitely wasn't a repetitive click, but it was a little like I was driving over fine gravel, which I wasn't.

It's going into the shop tomorrow to have the rear window replaced under warranty.  If it's still happening then I'll mention it.

It will be like having tooth ache.

Right there until you sit down in the chair then it goes away..... but in your case until you drive on the forecourt!
