After taking more than 100 lessons 20-year-old Melanie Wood was desperate to pass her driving test.

But she then looked on the internet and discovered that the small Argyle town of Inveraray has an 87% pass rate for drivers aged between 17 and 25.

This was almost double the 47.9% for her age group in her hometown of Anniesland in north Glasgow.

So Melanie jumped on a bus for the one-and-a-half-hour journey to Inveraray.

She took her test for a fifth time on the town's quiet country roads - and luckily for her, the gamble paid off when she passed.

I may have told this story before but the above reminds me of when we were in Sydney and #2 son was coming up to take his driver's licence test. He was living at the uni at the time but would take his test at our local center on a Saturday morning. Only a few weeks beforehand the NSW RTA released figures showing each test centre's pass/ failure rate. Our local had the lowest pass rate in the State. The next nearest one, at Hornsby had one of the highest.
I told Cameron about it and asked if he wanted to book at Hornsby.
He said no. he's rather go local.
Which I thought displayed a nice confidence in his abilities.

He passed.

  • Sorry, but my karma just ran over your dogma.
I spent nearly a year working as a driving examiner for Queensland Transport several years ago. I never heard of anyone taking 100 lessons (between 100  - 150 hours of instruction). However, it was not uncommon to have people take five or more attempts at passing the practical driving test. My record was an African lady who finally passed her driving assessment after 13 attempts.

Nerves are a very funny thing with some people. I had clients who were barely able to hold their foot on the clutch or operate the indicators as they were shaking too much. I used to feel sorry for them as they made it impossible for me as an examiner to pass them.

Good luck to the young lady, I hope she manages to keep her nerves under control when she's in a vehicle by herself.

This is probably correct.

Here in UK they tend to suggest that learners have a minimum of 30 lessons, first time pass and then 10 for additional fails........

In contrast I had 3 way back when the horse was the order of the day
1 lesson then a double for the test.......
