Thanks for all the greetings guys - it cheered me up during what is proving to be rather a bleak day........

I woke up with a bad ear infection - fortunately I have some antibiotics in stock

My electric shaver went phut

Carrying a large box downstairs I knocked a crystal vase off the shelf in the landing window and it bounced down the stairs leaving shards of glass on the way down

My 46 year old step-daughter phoned to tell her mother (my wife) that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

It's a touch gloomy here at present as you might imagine.

Actually I will get away scot free in the vase debacle.

When I retired from my job in Bahrain in 1997 the company wanted to give me a gold Rolex watch as a leaving present. But - I already had a Rolex and a Hublot watch so the last thing I wanted was to have another one.

My late wife had for years had an ambition to own a full set of classy china and cut glass tableware so I asked the Company for a comprehensive range of Royal Albert China and Waterford cut glass items for 8 place settings, plus a load of miscellaneous stuff instead. I have no idea what they paid for it but it was not cheap.

I kept it all when my late wife died and still have it. Most of it is stored away because my current wife came complete with such stuff and understandably prefers her own - but the vases are "mine".

I have twice tried to sell it all - but demand for china and crystal has slumped and I am unwilling to let it go for peanuts. In the UK few families now sit down together for dinner and the young families no longer want such stuff. They either go out for fast food or eat a take-away whilst slumped in a chair watching TV.

It's the same thing with Swarovski crystal. I have a number of collectors pieces (all animals) which used to command high prices. For example, I have the original limited edition Eagle which I bought new for about $750 but a year or two later was fetching $9,000. I should have sold it then - the bottom has dropped out of the market and you can now get one via the internet for less than $3000.
