Hi,
I've been looking at trading in my old but much loved 2005 Honda CRV for the past few weeks. I had thought I'd stick with an SUV, but I really don't need one anymore and smaller cars started to really appeal. Yesterday I had a test drive of a brand new i30 and was totally impressed. I didn't sign straight away, I wanted to come home and do some research, find out what people thought of them, what was a decent price etc. (I don't know much about cars). Almost everything I've read has been positive. This forum has been really useful. Anyway this morning I'm going to take the kids with me so they can have a sit in it and hopefully get as excited about it as I am. They both love the Honda. There were tears when I told them he was going.
I'm getting the elite, hatch, petrol, manual (I don't like autos, not as much fun to drive) in black.
Are there any extras I should ask for?

Cheers

Welcome to the club, and good luck with your purchase!

Your timing is great for buying a car: Beat the tax man with new car bargains this month

When I bought my car the dealer offered upholstery and paint protection, plus window tint.   I declined all of those, but got window tint done elsewhere at about half the dealer price.

The only other accessories that I got were floor mats, dash mat, and mud flaps.

Thanks for the welcomes.

Don't know how to do the "quote" thing yet, apologies.

It'll be interesting to see how it is when we're all in it together, however I sat in all the seats yesterday and I had enough room.

The salesman did not mention paint protection yesterday but he did say he would give me the window tinting and floor mats for no extra. I think I'll ask for mud flaps as well.

Thanks!

G'day Jen,

If I can fit two kids in car seats with ease your kids should fit perfectly.

As for options, I would ask for a mat for the hatch. The carpet is functional, but cheap, and can be difficult to vacuum, with kids and school bags and the like you will probably appreciate it.

I would also ask for a diesel engine, but that's just me  :whistler:

Don't worry about paint protection, I have never used it, and haven't noticed a difference. Put the substantial savings towards the occasional detail if you don't want to give the car a polish yourself.

How are your negotiating skills. It sounds as though there is plenty of profit margin in your negotiated price, if the paint and tinting is being "thrown in". Personally, I'd like the price lowered rather than pay their fees for these items. If your not paying cash for your car, then any "extras" will be part of the financed changeover price and you will be paying interest on these extras as well. There are plenty of reputable tinting places in cities that can do as good a job, at a much lower price. If we knew where you are located, it would help, too.

The deal is done!

Thanks for all the feedback. The kids LOVED it! So relieved.  I ended up with the tinting, mats, paint protection and mud flaps. It didn't occur to me to ask for a carpet for the hatch. Bummer. Maybe the paint protection is a waste but they gave it to me, so no problem.

They have to do a swap with another dealership to get the black one, they think it will take about 2 weeks to be delivered and then given the extras and then it's all mine!

I'm in the Blue Mountains so I went down to the Penrith dealership, they were all very helpful. Since I've been in quite a few dealerships over the past few weeks I've talked with many who were much pushier and far less helpful.

Maybe I could've haggled over the price more but I am not great at the haggling, I thought I did ok. I've never bought a brand new car before so I'm a little bit like a kid on Christmas Eve at the moment.  :happydance:

I'm with tla here, don't take any of the Dealer Extra's.you can have them all done elsewhere for far less money,Dealers love getting people sucked into their extra's,this is where they make their money, don't take their Cash back or Fuel card,YOU ARE PAYING FOR IT,when the BIL and I had our car yard, the fuel card where a great scam,a $500 fuel card would cost us $350(working with a fuel company)Body treatment would cost us then under $150 we used to charge $600,you simply just keep adding to the price of the car

You've done well.
Haggling is all very well for those of us who've been around or in the industry for more years than we'd care to admit. But the majority of people aren't in that position.
So, it sounds like you've got yourself a great car and with some worthwhile add-ons.  Buying a basic car and then chasing around for all the extras only adds a heap more angst (and more haggling).
The big plus from what you've said is that you're happy the Penrith people aren't overly pushy. That in itself is worth a lot.

Enjoy your car and we'd love to see some pics of it when you take delivery. If you're not sure how to do that, send a PM  to one of the moderators and we'll help you.

Well done on the new car. You will love the Elite.  I also got the mud flaps but find they are almost non existent.  More of a mud edge, but it's all about keeping the design integrity of the car so nothing like a 70s style kingswood mud flap.

Anything ya can get for free has got to be good...

I personally would not pay for any extras at a Hy Dealership as they are always overpriced.  The paint protection is, as far as I am concerned, a gag I can wax my own car thank you.

Your gonna love your new car I am sure, enjoy  :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob:
