Hey guys, I'm about to install an amp and sub in a 2012 i30. I was wondering if anyone knows whats the box looking thing underneath the passenger seat. It has 4 or 5 different wires connecting to it so i'm guessing it cant be the seatbelt sensor. If anyone could let me know what it is I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Kieron

Hi Kieron

Welcome to the club.

Possible connections to the front seat:

- cables for the side-airbag in the seat
- cables for the sensor detecting weight on the seat
- cables for the heating elements

If you disconnect the cables for the airbag in the seat and then put on the ignition, the warning light in the dash will come on, and it may require a visit to the dealer to get it reset.

Thanks for the welcome guys, and the reply.

Do you mean that overall, as in if I disconnect the seat fully, and say it is the airbag and reconnect it, then turn the car on will I still get the warning light, or will I only get it if i disconnect it and turn the car on without reconnecting the wires under the seat back up.

Also would anyone see a problem in wiring one of the 12v sockets as a remote turn on for the amp?
I have checked, and as far as I can tell it only turns on when I press the ignition button once i.e. turn the accessories on.

Thanks,

Kieron

Personally, I'd be a bit wary about the amp under the seat. How hot do they get. They usually have a decent heat sink on top and require reasonable ventilation. If it gets hot, it may affect the workings of the control box for the air bags etc. I would keep the acc on requirement too just to ensure no flat batteries.

Theres about a 3 inch gap from the bottom of the box to the top of the amp and there is an air con vent which will blow right over the top of the amp. I guess I just have to remember i cant use the 'leg warmer' for warming :P

You will only get a warning light if you have the airbag disconnected when turning on ignition.

Why not just install the amp in the boot unless you are planning on putting an shallow mount underseat sub as well?

You may find it's easier to use the remote power trigger out from your stereo deck rather than running from the 12V power out.  That way the electrical circuits are still isolated and you'll be running wires from the back of your deck anyway.
