Hi everyone. I'm very close to buying a 2013 i30 SR and have the choice between two for basically the same price. One has the sunroof and one does not. While I like the idea of a sunroof, this one is basically the entire roof of the car and I'm wondering if it will actually result in the car temp inside being much hotter than without. Oh and by the way, I'm in Brisbane, Qld where it gets in the low 40C in Summer and not much less tha the low 20s C in Winter  If anyone has one of these with a sunroof and can comment or just general opinions would be appreciated. Thanks  :D

I would take the one without the sunroof. Agree there's too much glass area.

I concur with this.......even though it has it nice effects on balmy nights and looking at the moon and stars....last week I cleaned out the gum leaves and seeds {this is from where wifey parks it at the hospital where she works} from the tracks of the sunroof....it is not easy as you do not have access to all the tracking, especially at the back of the sunroof....an air compressor with an nozzle gun and a vacuum cleaner will clean the tracks up.....

I love the pano roof in my Premium. Being a Brisbane member myself I completely understand your dilemma. However, the sunroof actually cools my car down quicker. I simply open all four windows, crack the sunroof open partially, and within a few minutes, usually by the time I am out the gate of my workplace, the car is cool and the air conditioner is at temp.

that's a very good point, as hot air rises, just throw a cover over the car if parked outside. the sun roof looks great to me. especially with a white GD

It is certainly a bit of a dilemma! Long term members would guess that if I got offered something for free I would take it every time. Like John (Lakes) says, it certainly looks great too!  :goodjob:

I always assumed there was a blind on the inside (to keep the sun off your head on really hot days) I am pretty sure there is/was in the i45...

So to me the only downside is the cleaning of the tracks. So if you regularly park under trees, that might be the dealbreaker... :undecided:

I have a panoramic roof on my car and consider it a great feature. the upside is the ability to cool the car quickly and the air of spaciousness it gives to the car interior.

The only downside I have found is that with the roof blinds wide open the sun streams through and makes it difficult to see the sat nav screen clearly.

I am looking forward to the summer and being able to cruise through the countryside with the roof open, sniffing in the smells, listening to the birds and with only minimal disturbance to my remaining grey hair

Dazzler, indeed, there is a blind. Surprising it also makes a significant reduction in road noise when it is shut. At least to my ears.

Thanks everyone for the input. Still haven't signed on the dotted line yet. The sunroof car on offer is a new car but I've just had confirmed that it is an Aug 13 build and a Nov 13 compliance and the D/Away price is $27,750 with 12 mths rego and full 5 year warranty etc. While its technically a new car, I'm just not sure about it as we are almost into May of 2014??? But from what I can make out, the price is about $4-5K off the list price if I were to wait until later this year for a 2014 build and compliance. By my calculations either I save now and maybe lose some in 5 years time when it's seen as a 2013 model or I pay more now and maybe get a bit more at resale in 5 years. Any thoughts anyone???

Depends how long you think you might keep it. If you're intending to hang onto it for 5 years or more, the 8 months difference ( 12 if you wait for a new one), won't make a big difference come trade in time.
I'd grab the 2013 one.

I ordered mine with the sunroof as an option (MY14 SR) as I had been looking originally at a Premium that had it as standard. Really love the look it gives the car. As others have said you can use it to help dissipate heat very quickly. The sunshade closed does reduce cabin noise as compared with it open. Driving at night with it open you have to be careful of overhanging trees with Flying Foxes in them!!!!! (Thankfully it WAS shut at the time).
Hyundai designers/ engineers didn't quite get it on the money, as there is a fair degree of wind noise ....don't even think about it over 80 kph. It is nosier at lower speeds than my sons VW Bora with factory sunroof as it opens over the fixed roof which creates an obstruction for wind buffeting....the diffuser allows too much air through the mesh (It ( the diffuser)would, I think, be better as a solid material.
It may have been Hyundai press release sales pitch, but one review I read commented that the glass roof actually transmitted less heat into the interior than the metal one.
All that said the short answer is if it costs no more get it, and in any case enjoy your new car.

Thanks fangfarrier. So if with the roof open it is that noisy do you ever use it?? Also, I see your SR is an auto. I'm thinking of a manual, but can you tell me what kind of fuel economy you are getting?

Yes I do use it but only around town as above 80 KPH its too noisy...although if you crack one of the back windows open slightly it is much much better. Economy wise, over the last 3500Km (odometer now 5100) it is averaging 9.1KPL. (The diesel boys will be having a good laugh now) Keep in mind 4 days a week it does 1.8Km journeys morning and afternoon...therefor high KPL. and when I get to drive it I DRIVE it. Forget the eco shift mode, it sucks. Around town doing normal things straight auto but find some twisty stuff and the fun starts with the auto in sport mode.
The suspension and the low profile tyres make for really tight handling and the shifts in sport mode are pretty good.

Seriously, with your stated driving style and many short drives, that ain't half bad m'lord in a petrol i30.

I realised that my fuel consumption figures are not listed correctly. They should read 9.1 L/100K.

MikeSX     My Dad had a couple of Jowet Javelins amongst the numerous cars he owned in his life. FYI our flying foxes here are fruit eating bats that grow to have a 2-3 foot wingspan, live in colonies of thousands and can crap a sticky mess that can remove paint!!!

I had a sunroof in my first i30 and went without in my second.
I can't say I miss it.
Although it was good for getting rid of hot air (& accompanying smells) quickly. :D
When closed, I always closed the blind as well, otherwise it was too noisy.

Loving my i30sr with the roof.
MY14, petrol seems low for me getting around 10-11L /100kms but my driving can be a bit maniac.

I normally drive with eco mode, but find myself switching to sports (tip tronic) and having a bit of fun with that.

White with the black sunroof in my opinion is very nice.

I bought an i30 with Panoramic roof a few months ago. I love it!

I have found that when it is hot and the car is parked, the car is hot if I do not shut the roller blinds before leaving the car.
Remember we are talking about cool (ish) summers here....

That said I just put the aircon on and in a few minutes all is well. I love the light that the glass gives and often have the roof right back. Do remember though, to take some suncream if you do.
