Looking forward to picking up a i30 crdi 2.0 diesel 57plate on Monday. Any tips or advice on what to keep eyes n ears open for faults wise. Noticed the gear knob was looking a bit warn and the leatherette cover was scuffed. anybody ever replaced one before and could pass on how to do this?

Welcome Liam :D

I test drove a 57 plate 2.0L diesel in 2008 - it was fantastic. How many miles are on the clock? The 2.0L CRDi has a timing belt rather than a chain so make sure a change of that appears somewhere in its service history, depending on mileage of course :)

Hi liam

 :wttc:

What year is a 57 plate..
2007 sept to 2008 march

Why do they use that numbering system I wonder? (not very user friendly from what I can see)  :undecided:

IIRC - we used to have a system when a single letter represented a calendar year. Hence it was easy to spot which year a car was sold in.

However, the motor trade complained that this resulted in a huge lump of sales on the day the letter changed and they made poor sales at other times of the year. Hence the letters were changed twice a year - August and March.

The current reg No system has followed that philosophy - daft innit.

I don't get it. What's the point?

Read through this and be prepared to answer questions.

http://www.cvpg.co.uk/REG.pdf

Briefly

From 1963 to 83 the reg no format was ABC 123 A where A was the calendar year

From 1983 to 2007 the format was A 123 ABC where A was the 12 month period from 1st Aug to 31st July the following year. The change of "year" in August was to suit motor trade sales for some inexplicable reason.

At some point - I can't recall when - the system was tweaked and the year split into two periods, from 1st Aug to 28th Feb and 1st March to 31st July - again in response to pressure from the motor trade. In these years there were two successive letters - but it only lasted a few years before the change to the current format

Current system is AB 02 CDE where AB defines the town or area registered, 02 = 2002 from 1st March to Aug 31st 52 = Sept 2002 to Feb 2003.

It's all very easy and logical isn't it.

Ok so the plate numbers are clear now but I still can't figure out why it's done?

^--- because the UK was running out of options for new registrations, while trying to keep the older registration system unique.

The idea is to prevent any possibility of deceit, with regards the age of a vehicle on the UK roadways or in For Sale magazines.

Unclip the boot from the console first ( feel under the top edge through the vinyl boot for two tabs either side and pull up from underneath ) then twist the gear knob anti-clockwise, it'll be fixed quite firm so twist hard.
