Just to confuse things, I bought my i30 over the internet. I've never met the salesman, never seen the dealership and I've also never met the finance guy or the insurance man. Yet I was able to haggle and so on via email / fax and mobile phone

Anyone else who has had an experience like this?

I pretty much did it the same way.

All the communication was done via phone call/fax. So, on top of getting a new car, I learnt how to fax things too. 

However, cause I went through a car buying service, they're the ones that went off and did all the haggling for me, etc.

I'm the same  - dealt entirely over the email/phone with the girl I bought mine from, and fax to sign the papers. Didnt actually meet her until the day I went to pick the car up! (well the dealership was 60km from home lol)

Oddly enough, ended up becoming good mates with the saleslady & her hubby - we ended up having very similar sense of humour etc and got on well. Strange what happens when you buy a car!!

I got mine in a complex way but not online, the only problem i see in future if everyone buys online, there will be no test drives no first hand checking out of different brands and so on. you will just have to go off feed back from forums i guess.
probably at some time in future there could be no dealers as we know them, warranty work could be contracted out to big service companys. just how i see it.

I played a couple of dealers off against each other to get the best deal - one offered to throw in metallic paint at the basic price.

I was about to place an order when I discovered online "brokers" offering the car (with metallic) around £900 cheaper.  It turns out they register the cars, then sell them with no miles, so the first driver is the second registered keeper.

Anyway, when I told the dealer about this, he huffed and puffed a bit and said he's have to "speak to head office", then the next day called me back to say they could match the broker.

So we saved £900.

I took an i30 for a run in Perth and the salesman wouldn't budge on his price.  Then I found a place online (not sure if I can name them here??) that gets fleet discount, so I sent an enquiry.  I got a phone call from them, told them exactly what I wanted on the car and they then went away and put it out to tender.  When they got back to me with the final price all I had to do was pay a deposit by credit card, then wait to hear from the dealership and get their banking details.  I ended up getting the car delivered to my home with a full tank of fuel for about $1000 less than what the dealership wanted (without delivery and fuel).  The window tint and rear spoiler were cheaper than what the dealership wanted to charge.

I went via betterdeal.com.au

They have 2 options - the free one where a dealer calls you up and gives you a quote, or paid where the dealers reverse auction for the sale.
I chose free, then went to see if another dealer could beat it.. after back and forth the salesperson going into the office asking the manager, I eventually walked out and went with the online deal as there was no stuff around.. probably could have saved a couple hundred but I appreciated the up front good price from the online dealer.
