Hi All

I recently bought a 2009 i30 2.0ltr 4 speed auto and it is a great little car. It was 2 weeks out of its 5yr warranty so I took a chance and bought it without an inspection. My last car was written off while parked so after 6 weeks of no car I bought this after a quick test drive. It was advertised as an SLX (love cruise control) but I now believe it to be an SX. No big deal stil a great little car.

I have noticed occasional clutch slipping but have not driven it enough to notice it being a problem. I just checked the A/T oil and it is very dark (possibly burnt) along with clutch slipping. Is this a major auto trans problem and if so would this not have been picked on its last inspection one month ago ?

Thanks for any advice
Paul

You have not stated the total kms the car has traveled. However, I would take the car ASAP to an auto specialist to have the filter and oil changed and a health check-up. I disagree personally with Hy's oil replacement schedule for auto transmissions. I prefer to have the oil completely refreshed @ approx 50k. This is to minimise the effects of clutch material possibly blocking filters or valves. Do you notice any lag when selecting R gear. There is a problem with SOME 4 speed transmissions reported on this forum, with the valve body and that is a tell tale sign which requires the replacement of the transmission with a reconditioned one. We have 2 autos in our stable and both are working flawlessly. :Touch:

Yours might simply need a little adjustment, let's not assume the worst case scenario at this stage.

Hi. Car has done 72,000kms. I hope I am not looking at a new transmission 4 weeks out of warranty. It will cost me $900 for cruise control. That is a necessity for me. Silly to trust people.

Has the car been serviced at Hy or an authorised service agent. If so and they have a record of past problems with the trans, you may still be entitled to a warranty fix. Hopefully it's not that serious.

Hi Phil

Found Service Centre which is quite local. They have done some of the warranty services in the past and are currently replacing transmission oil. Will let you know how it goes.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Phil. I had the Auto transmission fluid changed but they did not change the filter.  The transmission is still slipping alot as I drive around. I am worried that the whole transmission may fail.

I live in Parramatta, Sydney (NSW). Could you recommend an honest repairer.

Much Appreciated

Sorry, no can do as I'm in South Australia. I can only suggest that you scan your yellow pages to locate a business in your area, check to see that they are busy, and ensure that they have the highest NRMA rating possible. Then ring them and see how you are treated. If you think they are professional then get an estimate for repairs.

Unfortunately, changing the oil, will not help a mechanical defect, so it will need to be checked professionally.

I am surprised to see a clutch mentioned in an auto box - other than the type that are really automated manual boxes.

My idea of an auto box is one that uses a fluid flywheel to connect the gears to the engine.

I'm surprised that an automatic mechanic would just change the oil with the problems you have listed.

Personally I would have a chat with the Hyundai dealer. The auto has had problems (either the valve body which this sounds like to me, or the full auto), it is reasonably expected to last longer than 72,000 and the ACCC will be all over them if they don't fix it.

The vehicle warranty takes a second place to your statutory rights. Don't spend any money until you have discussed this with Hyundai.

The auto trans is just like a manual trans once you get past the torque converter, that is it's is a solid mechanical coupling to the wheels. inside the trans are a series of friction plates which are the clutches and these are engaged / disengaged by electronic or fluid pressure. As the engagement transition is happening, power is transmitted through metal bands, so that the feed to the wheels appears to be continuous. This friction material collects in the trans oil and eventually dirties the oil which requires replacement and filter cleaning as well.

The torque converter is just a fluid coupling to the engine.

That's my understanding of how they work, at least. Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong.  :D

There are several sets of planetary gears, which are engaged one after another by those clutches when accelerating. The torque converter also has a lock-up clutch which engages when cruising at the highway. In modern auto trannies those clutches are controlled by electro-hydraulic valves.

If those clutches wear out, they can indeed start slipping.

An another common problem is with those valves acting up. To have smooth gear changes, they must operate smoothly. If valves tend to get stuck or are moving too quickly, it will lead either clutch slipping or hard shifting.

Thanks to all who have given advice. I met a lady with an identical car who told me she had a repair done to the transmission which fixed all problems.
Has anyone had repairs done to the transmission. Was it covered under warranty and what was done.

Thanks

If an auto transmission goes during the warranty period it is usually covered under warranty (unless they can find an out like services missed etc..)

Not sure of the exact term without doing a search but it is usually the "throttle body valve" or something like that. It is a very expensive fix if it happens outside warranty. Seems to be quite a few 2010/11 FD i30 autos having this issue..  :undecided:
