HP has recalled six million laptop power cables after they heated up and burned users.

On the company’s recall page, it says it has received “29 reports of power cords overheating and melting or charring resulting in two claims of minor burns and 13 claims of minor property damage”.

The power cable is the model LS-15AC, and was bundled with HP and Compaq notebook and mini-notebook computers and accessories. They’re black, and have ‘LS-15’ printed on the AC adapter end.

They were bundled with devices sold between September 2010 and June 2012.

I have to say I have been using HP/ Compaq computers almost exclusively since I started buying my own (after the AMSTRAD ). Both desktop and Laptop. Never had any issues with them hardware wise.
My wife had a Dell which also gave no trouble - bought that because we had them right through our work organisation until I retired.
And I bought the 10" Samsung for travel, purely on price.

Pretty much any problems I've had with computers over the years have been software related.
I'll stick with HP now.

You have to give HP some due... the hardware is impeccable. I'm using a Pavilion Win8.1 touchscreen lappy right now (personal) and have 3 work's ProBook lappies right besides me (I'm working from home today).

I on the other hand bought a Compaq device which it turns out had a known defect. The piece of junk in question carked it within days of the warranty expiring and the cheap b@stard$ gave me the runaround and refused to replace it - even though these had the warranty extended overseas for the known hardware defect (motherboard burning up). I pulled it apart once it was clear the manufacturer wasn't going to do anything and was not especially impressed with the build quality either

This act of stupidity has most likely cost them thousands since then. I won't touch their dodgy crap and won't sell it or use it and advise everyone I meet to run a mile.

Dell on the other hand has been largely bulletproof over the years and easy to deal on the odd occasion service is required. I use nothing else when I deploy desktops, laptops and servers and have no reason to regret that decision.

Compaq/HP on the other hand - your taking a chance when you buy their stuff I think.

I understand where you're coming from Keith.
However, given the issues I've seen over the past years with Hyundai, if I stuck to that principle I'd not have an i30 and 2 Accents in my immediate family right now.

I got a big STFU from HP for something that was so obviously defective, they extended the warranty in other markets but not here. Hyundai couldn't come close to that sort of poor customer service in a month of Sunday's - its in a class all by itself.

So while its working -  :goodjob2:. If anything goes wrong, just stick it in the bin and buy something else.

I bought several thousand HP laptops (business models) here in the UK in that window, and a reasonably thorough spot check a couple of weeks ago showed we had no cables with that designation. I suspect they are 110v cables (US).
