Speed cameras in the capital are to be upgraded, with Londoners being warned to watch their average speed and not just their rate while passing the camera.

Hundreds of traditional "wet film" speed cameras are being replaced with digital cameras, as are cameras at traffic signal junctions where motorists can be caught jumping the lights.

Average speed cameras, which check speed compliance along a more extensive length of road rather than just where the camera is located, have been trialled on a stretch of the A13 east of London.

I assumed they stopped using wet film cameras years ago!

Most of my 185m trip down south on Sunday (and the return on Tuesday) was observed by average speed cameras.

So if I had to suffer, so can the Londoners. Bring it on.

Yes, and at a rapidly increasing pace.  The latest versions are  wifi operation with quick release (relatively) pole mounted fixings to permit transfers to new locations.  As every road entry to the council area has signs warning of "county wide average speed cameras" no other signage is required.

So if you get a fine and as your defence you say that you have NEVER been out of the council area and the Police can not prove, therefore, you have never seen the signs, will any fine be void ........?

I put that in to counter any claim that signs are required where speed cameras are operational...which is not, and never has been, a requirement.

There are speed camera signs in other parts of the county but those at the entries are intended to cover those motorists who do not remain within the county all their lives....Of course such  a claim could be refuted immediately by consulting the hundreds of ANPR cameras with which the county, and country, are endowed.
