I have a problem with what feels like the ABS operating without me having my foot on the brake pedal - there is a grinding noise in the front of the car and the steering wheel is pulled quite strongly out of my hands as the brakes operate - this car is going to kill me as it happens intermittently at low and high speed when turning the steering wheel and will make the car change lanes.
The Hyundai dealership can't replicate it and say it's probably the discs needing machining but I don't have my foot on the brakes when it happens so it can't be the discs.
Anyone had similar problems? Your help would be greatly appreciated. The car is a 2012 Elite Hatch.

Kind regards
Gary

      Caloundra, Queensland.
What kilometers has it done.
I agree it's not the discs if your foot isn't on the brake pedal - unless you've got a siezed / siezing caliper.
I'd be taking the technician for a drive but with you driving - until it happens.

Only 29000k's - I've taken their mechanic out but of course it won't happen with him in the car - I'll just have to wait til it gets really bad I suppose.

If it's making a grinding noise, then components are rubbing together. I would be stopping the car when it next happens and remove the wheel inspecting thoroughly. Grinding is not a normal function, so there should be evidence of abnormal activity. I would also seriously inspect the wheel bearing as well, it may be collapsing.

Yeah I think the grinding noise is the ABS working - coming on and off - there is no bearing noise at any time or speed - the dealership could find no damage or noise in the front axles/wheels. It's that ABS graunching noise if you know what I mean. And it happens intermittently in both the front wheels but more often in the passenger side (left) front wheel.
It seems to stop when the steering wheel is straightened - I initially thought it could be the CV joints but they wouldn't do it intermittently I don't think.

Does this model have the ?? (Can't recall name) rings on the drive shaft?

I ask cause on my accent the ring had split so was giving an odd reading causing the abs to apply

Administrator Comment Reluctor rings - yes it does

Unusual problem.  Given you think the ABS could be modulating the circuit, and you aren't breaking, and you say it pulls the steering does it always happen when you are steering? Always on the side you are steering away from? If it does perhaps it could be caused by a faulty yaw sensor causing the ESP to fire to reduce 'phantom' understeer. The big question is does the ESP light come on when this happens? No ESP light rules out this hypothesis.

Yes it only happens when I'm steering into a corner - mainly to the left and usually when it's a mild downhill slope. The ABS kicks in and grabs the steering quite hard and lets go when I straighten the wheel - this is ok at 10-20kph but very scary at 80-100kph.

Sorry - and no lights on the dash come on either. The Reluctor rings sounds a clue - I'll get the dealer to check. Thanks for your input - will keep you posted.

The more I think about it the more convinced I am that it must be the Electronic Stability Programme - only happens when changing direction so it must be the skid sensor (yaw?) at fault. Can the ESP be disengaged on the i30?

It can on my 2014 GD.
I hope this problem can be resolved urgently for you.
It would be a very scary situation for you and for the majority of the motoring HY
owners methinks.

Found the ESP button on the rh side of the dash (car skidding icon ) and turned it off. Unfortunately you have to remember to turn it off every time you restart the car but it's better than the alternative.
I haven't been having any problems with it recently (last 2 weeks ) but friends of mine had the same thing happen in an identical i30. I now have it booked into Hyundai to check the ESP sensors and also any fault codes. Will let you know what they find.

I had something similar happen on my Daewoo and that was the reluctor rings. They had come adrift.
