My great i30 CRDI FD 2011, due to excessive cost of dealer servicing, yesterday received it's 1st service with my trusted mechanic. Used the recommended Shell oil and genuine filter from Ebay. The past dealer services have been OK but costly, after this independent one the car feels like it just left the show room and I am happy.

I was advised to take the vehicle to the dealer as there is an oil leak round the ERG (or EGR) area that should be fixed. I will do this as a matter of urgency. Is this a common fault or just my bad luck?

I also had some electrical work done :
1. A Turbo timer was fitted as I was used to one on my old Toyo Cruiser and the Turbo has lasted 600,000k still going strong. I am now forgetful and at times do not give the i30 turbo time to cool. I think if I set the delay time to 1 minute it should be OK. Any other opinions?

2. The power point and plug in the back of the CW was overheating when I plugged in the drink cooler I bought. I want a cold beer but not at the cost of a hot (on fire) car.  The Auto Electrician said the wire and plug from the front to the rear was not very heavy so he ran a new lead from somewhere in the front, then installed a good heavy duty plug. He also wired it so it is now off when the engine is not running, this prevents a flat battery if I forget to turn it off manually.

So I am most happy with the independent service and electrical work but concerned the oil leak was not previously detected by the dealer who charged much more than the independent mechanic. I will be talking to the dealer about this.

From Hyundai's warranty policy.....

GENERAL EXEMPTIONS

The warranty shall not apply to the following:

9b) Slight oozing of oil or fluids from seals and/or gaskets which cause no material decrease in the level of such fluids.

Thanks Rusty.
The more I learn about the Hyundai 5 year warranty the more I feel I have been "conned". Recently I was considering upgrading to an i40 CRDI but when offered just $10,000 trade I (or should I say my other half) said NO. This and the excessive charges above capped price services mean we will now drive the car until it falls apart, thus the reason for installing Turbo Timer and upgrading 12v power line to rear.
I will study the terms of warranty and attempt to have it rectified under warranty.
As I did not ask the mechanic to show me the leak, could you tell me where I could locate the ERG so I may inspect the fault?

I suspect you'll find that Hyundai's warranty conditions are similar across the whole car industry, Hornet.... :victory:

As for Hyundai's service and running costs, while everyone whinges about them, it would seem they are pretty much in line with other brands...
