here in korea, a 1.6 crdi premium costs 20,000,000 krw and a 1.6 petrol premium costs 17,000,000 krw.
(exchange rate is-- 1,000 krw = 0.99 aud = 0.48 gbp = 0.57 eur)

if i drive 20,000 km a year, it'll take me about 4 years to recover the initial cost of the diesel engine.
( 1 litre of diesel = 1500 krw, 1 litre of petrol = 1700 krw )

i realise that in the long run, the diesel is a much better investment --for the environment and my pocket book-- but, i'm wondering why there's such a high difference in cost between the two engine types.

I could only guess, but the diesel motor weighs more than the petrol. but i would think the main reason could be less diesels manufactured. if you make less numbers you get less return so cost is shared by smaller number.

but i enjoy driving cars that make Torque at a lower rev, specially if it is manuel and i'm driving in traffic.
the price difference you are quoting is about the same here in Australia.
i'm very happy with my diesel, if the i30 did not come with diesel i would not own one at all.

17,000,000 krw = £8,300 gbp

Both good deals when compared to UK prices

I missed this thread.. apparently diesels are not popular in Korea (well the i30 diesel anyway)

Looks like as Lakes says it is a similar economic relationship between the two technologies...

I probably wouldn't have bought an i30 either if it weren't for the torque of the diesel = great driveability

I was hounded by a M8 who heard about the i30 Crdi well b4 they hit Australia to test drive it (I buy a lot more cars than he does) Once you test drive one nothing else in the same class feels as good...

He ended up buying a Honda Accord V6 (with the variable cylinder technology) for his wife and a New model Kia Cerato for himself... (wife likes bigger cars and he couldn't get enough trade on an i30)
