Hi all

My i30 is around 7-8 months old with 14000km on the clock and due for it's first service in 3 days. Now, I will mention this to the shop when I take it in but I can't help but feel worried and thought i'd post here to see if anyone can help.

As I parked this morning I applied the handbrake. It made a massive bang noise (quite loud like something broke or snapped). The handbrake then went slightly limp for a second or so. I then spent 5-10 minutes testing the bandbrake and it appeared to be working fine, locking in with tension and precenting roll etc. What does everyone think? I've read a few things on the www and most people say it happens from time to time when the teeth do not lock in properly and then finally catch. Some say that something has actually snapped and/or broken.

Thank you all for your time.
Rob

I doubt anything has broken. Was the bang near your handbrake lever or under the car. Report it at your service to get it on record.

BTW, to minimize wear on the ratchet teeth in the brake handle, always press the release button when pulling the handbrake on, until you feel the resistance of the cables.

Thanks for replying Phil. I couldn't exactly tell where the noise came from but it was very loud. I think it sounded like it came from under the car more than anything - like a massive rock hit the bottom of the car. I didn't press the button either now you mention it.

Thanks again.

If the teeth of the ratchet don't quite catch, then it may let go under tension and cause the large bang that you heard as it hits the next tooth on the way down.  As Phil said, mention it when you take it in for a service.  Hopefully it is nothing to worry about.
