Hi everyone

This is my first post here - I looked for a while to see if has been covered here, but could not find anything. Apologies if I've overlooked any already available information.

The sound system in my 2012 GD i30 Hatch Active inserts a small gap between tracks on all CDs. Thus, on my many "continuous" CDs which have no actual silences between tracks, there's this annoying gap of about half a second. Also, the volume (CD and radio) reverts to "10" after the car is turned off/on.

Sound system is model GD-01 running firmware version 2.05 - I'm wondering if a firmware update is something which would fix these glitches, which although hardly major, are weird and annoying, epecially the inserted gaps!

Everything else about the car, I adore!

Thank you for any replies,

Charles

Hyundai should have updated your firmware when you had the car last serviced, mine is a GD-01 running 2.10 firmware which was released 2 years ago.

Welcome Charles,

The two concerns you have are normal operation. Cant do anything about the gap between tracks however the volume can be changed.

It is set at 10 so you dont have it cranking when you get home and turn car off without turning it down and get blasted the next morning.

To change the "initial volume" turn the audio unit on, hold down power button/knob for a few seconds until it beeps and initial volume is displayed on screen. Tap power button/knob to enter initial volume setting and turn button/knob to raise or lower setting. Tap button/knob again to set.

I sought of agree on it being 'strange' (though per cruiserfied it is normal operation) - being it seems semi-atypical to many headunits.

The only solution I could suggest for getting rid of the gaps... would be something like ripping the CD to mp3.   And then joining them together into one - never done this (so no recommendations) but it seems there are tools to assist (from a quick google search) :link: 17 Best Free Software to join MP3 files and 'Free Merge MP3' is apparently a new one (~50k downloads but only 19 feedback votes but 4.5 of 5).

I've been known to use interesting turns of phrase, but haven't even seen Gonz use that one!

Hi Cruiserfied

Thank you very much for the reply and the welcome. I'm surprised you can't get rid of the gaps, BUT if this is all I have to "complain" about in a car, I am truly fortunate!

I followed your instructions (sorry, somehow I missed that section in the manual) and it works as you say. "Initial volume" changes to (say) 14. However, even if I turn off ignition and remove key, and then replace it, when I turn unit on again, it is still set on playing volume level of 10! When I go back to the "initial volume" display, though, it is indeed still reset at 14, even though it PLAYS on 10. Weird! Maybe a firmware upgrade will at least fix this small issue?

cheers,
Charles

Hi Ibrokeit,

Thank you very much for your help! I will indeed do this with my "no gaps" CDs. Must emphasise these are legitimate CDs, for what its worth. Lots of live CDs, and of course, Dark Side of the Moon...

cheers!

CraigB, thank you for your reply. I bought my i30 in late March of this year, and I am having it serviced in two weeks' time, for the first time in my ownership. Obviously the dealer (where I am getting it serviced) didn't do the firmware update. But, are you saying your GD-01 does NOT insert gaps? Just asking to confirm, and not in any way trying to second-guess Cruiserfied, who said I'm stuck with the gaps.

Thanks again,
Charles

I can't comment on the gaps as I've never tried a CD in my system, I do know that purchased CD's have gaps between the songs but as to what happens with playing home made CD's I wouldn't know.

I wouldn't be too worried about stating they are legitimate CDs around here - as far as I can tell many members have their music on USB sticks (i.e. mp3, wma, etc. - most I suspect will be in mp3).   Implying they 'ripped'/'converted' or the more legit/technical sounding 'transcoded' or 'format shifted' from one medium, or format, to another.

Mine is a combination of mp3s of CDs I own and iTunes tracks converted to mp3.

The latter is a built in feature of iTunes (convert to mp3) - though not a highly intuitive one.  And does require some manual cleanup afterwards - as you end up with two of each track appearing in your library usually listed one after the other which will then be played in that order - so you need to copy the mp3 files elsewhere, then manually delete the entries for them from you library.

And I do have a few purchased CDs that, like yours, are gapless between tracks - assuming the playback device can supports such.   I remember one CD player (or software media player) that I used actually allowed you to choose always have the gaps (even if the CD was made to be 'gapless').
