Just an FYI... what you call an 'mk1' (being the first generation body type) is often referred to as 'FD'; with the 2nd generation being 'GD' - occasionally you will see GD2 (indicating newer/different variant of the GD body type).   A number of topics/posts use the FD/GD labelling to indicate to which the information is relevant to (or came from).

What does the fd and gd stand for ?
Is it short for some thing ? I've always used mk1 mk2 to indicate the cars body type.

Not short for anything (just the series naming code)

In the Wiki article they mainly only use the FD and GD moniker on the right side where the photos are.

Using the term Generation 1 and Generation 2 more in the body of the article.

2012 was the transition year so both styles have 2012 models!

There are mechanical differences between the 2 models as there are with all cars. So the forum is split between the FD  :happydance: and the later model GD  :).

Personally I prefer to talk FD / GD rather than mk1 etc. Mk1 has no meaning to me. The referencs books are also marked with the model variant which avoids confusion when issues are raised here too.

Both to FD  :happydance:   and the fact the reference books use them so it avoids confusion (after the initial confusion that is) - as it is series naming code.

Though not related to the i30s - Hyundai Sonatas for example since the late 90s have had codes of: EF, NF, YF, LF (don't ask me about the gaps - don't know).
