Welcome Ron, get a second opinion. Does it feel like the clutch is stuffed. We have members with 250k still on original clutch.

Hi Ron i30

With only 20.000 miles it's under warranty, right.

Ahhhh....

There have been cases of people having problems with their clutches where the root cause was failed/perished seal - that IIRC let oil get where it shouldn't have been and damaging the clutch, etc. due to the oil, or lack off, and/or damage to things like bearings.   I am not sure if it was then able to leak out of the component though i.e. eventually leave oil stains where parked.    I don't recall which threads or when (but it was relatively recent).  But it did seem to be a manufacturing fault as they were fairly new when they occurred if memory serves, or symptoms if any first appeared.

AFAIK we know - probably not do it again... but I suspect that proof will take time.

Anyway it is an issue that members on the forum are aware has occurred - though I don't think it is all that common.

Ah yes, an internal leak affecting the clutch, that would explain it! Good thinking Gareth.

Under warranty.  :goodjob:

You've just been unlucky Ron.

Yup.  And annoying for you being unable to use your i30 for a week?

Did they give you a loan car? Or did you need to rent a car? If the latter maybe approach Hyundai UK about the cost or partial covering of.

All cars can risk having a bad part fitted. I wouldn't worry about it happening again and the reason you haven't noticed is likely because there's this big cover under the engine and gearbox, but the dealer will remove it at service.

Honestly the only thing you should be upset about is not having your car for a week.
At least you know you have a good service provider who have picked up on this and have taken action without it having been complained about. And warranty is covering costs.
Could have happened to any manufacturer.

Yes, not a common fault and i30's appear to be more reliable and trouble free than most, if you compare the number of negative posts on here with those on any other major car forum.

Have just seen this and hopefully the OP has had his car repaired correctly and for free. However it is not true to say this is an unexpected fault, the UK Hyundai dealerships know this failure well and it is not confined to the I30. I had a pitched battle to even get the problem diagnosed, let alone fixed.

That is interesting what you say about them knowing it well and not confined to the i30.  Do you know if it is occurring to other specific Hyundai models only and/or across the brand for the market segment? Or across the market in general?

It is a pity though you had a pitched battle to get diagnosed then fixed.

I know I am being picky but... unexpected? or uncommon?    There were a number of replies saying it wasn't all that common (e.g. uncommon), but I am not sure any were trying to say it was unexpected (or unknown).

Again apologies for being very late back to this. I can see the confusion about my terminology. Well from talking to the service people the failure of the gearbox input seal in the smaller Hyundais is neither unexpected or uncommon. If it happens it is usually within the first 10,000 miles, mine began to fail at around 5000 and became undriveable at 6000. The seal itself is of only marginal quality and is replaced with a better quality item. There is little to argue about at this point, it is the replacement of the contaminated clutch assembly that really gets them going. Every excuse in the book was deployed to suggest that somehow I had contributed to the failure, was even told th gearbox could not be removed until I authorised it.........I suggested they had no confidence in their diagnostic skills. Anyway, on and on it went until the darn thing was eventually repaired.  Changed dealers, vast improvement, bought an I 30 turbo, so far so good.
