So the first service on my GD is 2 years in or 20000 miles according to the dealer. Having come from engines that want a first service at a 1000 miles is this normal?  The oil must be full of the initial break in rubbish after 2 years?

It is a bit crazy that it's every 15,000 Kilometres in Australia or 12 months whichever comes first and virtually double that in the UK. After over 8 years co-running this site I've still not got a good explanation for why that is. Quite a few of our member over her change their oil and filter every 7,500 kilometres, but with modern oils I consider that overkill.

At least here they recommend first oil change after few thousand k's. Thou that is not mandatory. Of course the oil will be dirty, but all the loose rubbish should be in the oil filter, not circulating in the oil.

While I'm getting super cheap ( $85 ) intermediate 7500km services I'll keep doing them though not really necessary as Dazzler mentioned.

I really don't understand the service intervals for Europe  20,000 miles ( 32,000km's ) is to long imo, our 1 year/15,000km intervals are the maximum I'd let a vehicle go before an oil change, even the oil companies ( Shell - Royal Purple - Mobile etc ) recommendations on their long life synthetic oils are 20,000km's maximum on extended service intervals.

Check the service book re warranty conditions and service.

For my 2012 gd if the car does less than 10,000 miles in 12 months then interim service required........... Oil change!

This should be detailed in the service book.

I chose to change the oil at the first (free) service/check up on both i30s I have owned and I would consider this to be good practice.

When I was a service manager at a VW/Skoda dealer the intervals was also 2 years/30.000 km

Many did that without problems and I don't recall a seized engine due to missing lubrication. Your car should be fine with those intervals, but if you don't like it, just have the oil & filter changed once a year for your peace of mind.  :D

It's 1 year or 30 000km here.

Mine got its first at 2400km and second at 4600km both at yearly interval. Then I bought the car and the third offical service came in at 33800km. I did a intermediate oil and filter change at ~ 19000km myself.

I think if it was overly harmful for the engine to run the original oil 30000km they would have a mandatory service much sooner, especially considering they do 5 year / free mileage warranty here, and clocking +30000km/year is not uncommon here.

From around the 18,000 mile mark in my 2014 GD2 I started to get "nervous" that it seemed overdue.

Got mine done at 20,000 miles and was relieved to get it done.

Had my 40,000 mile service done prematurely, around the 33,000 mile mark.

Was this due to the time interval rather than miles kicking in?

The difference between Australia and UK oil changes can be explained by the fact they are down under (the bottom of the earth) where most of the crap settles.......simples.... :hatoff:

NEXT QUESTION............... :workitout:
