Well, the roof of my car and bonnet now have a cool golfball texture. I think the driver side door as well and possibly more.  :crazy2:

I'm guessing such repairs might possibly mean a write off in terms of insurance? Anyone have any experience in this ?

Such is life.

That's bad luck.
I saw some pics on a mate's FB page of his place at Cromer. Heavy stuff.

Sorry to hear that! An elite Diesel Tourer! If it's a write off you'll struggle to get another.Shame (they are a great vehicle)

My Daughter had her Barina GS (the sporty model) written off by hail in in WA but it was a much lower value than your car and I think it smashed most of the windows too...

She had it in for a service and she went back to pick it up. She ducked inside to get out of the sudden hail and watched it get destroyed through the Dealer's front window!  :crazy1:

Had she paid?

If not then the car is still under the care of the dealer so claim from them!

It was covered by insurance. Took a while to get a payout though as there were literally hundreds of similar claims.

@neptune Ouch! I am surprised more people don't get killed in these storms!  You are getting about!

Well judging by the size of the dents, could easily be hospitalised.

Pil, sorry to see this happen.

Depending on the amount of damage, insurance Co. will write it off. In NSW, it will become a Statutory Write-off.
Therefore, it cannot be registered again in Australia, except if the owner buys it from the insurer.
So get an independent repair quote and consider your options.

Otherwise, it will be sold at auction and if it is a low Kms  write-off, a group of swarthy gentlemen will buy it and ship it overseas. :scared: Win Win for the insurer. ;)

Plenty got written off up here, sold at hail auctions, inspected by QT and reregistered up here. They are still getting around with the golf ball look.

My mate had a VW ute that I was sure they would write off. They threw a new roof and bonnet and fenders on it and it was as good as new.

It all comes down how much it will cost, how much they will get for the wreck if that figure exceeds the cost of writing off they cut you a cheque, as others have said get a cash quote before you get it assessed, as you may be able to buy the wreck and have it done yourself cheaper. Though when these storms hit, they provide a mountain of work and wait times are often long.

After the last big hail storm in Brisbane there was about 15,000 vehicles written off.  many were sold to Southern dealers, repaired and registered..

However, unlike QLD which has repairable writeoffs as well as Statutory writeoffs;  in NSW it is mandatory that they are all Stat. Therefore, they wreck them or export them overseas.

@eye30 Her Insurance...

As still under care of garage then they may be responsible for damage, no matter how caused.

Worth a try tho'  to save a hit on the owners insurance

When I tried to get a dent fixed on my i30 roof  months ago in the Gold Coast Qld  all the repair shops had a waiting list as all their tradesmen had gone to Sydney to repair hail damage on vehicles.

Yep, we got hail alright, standing on front porch watch my work van get a few new dents. Luckily i30 was in garage, neighbours weren't so lucky. Nearby had tennis ball size hail & a number of windscreens were broken.

Was also in Sydney CBD on Friday and luckily caught bus home 1 hour before the storm hit.

Hi Daz, Van is both as I sort of own business (kids are taking over but I have to fund it  :undecided:) but I should be retired, it's insured but I'd guess if I claim they'd write it off & I'd need to go through the hassle of getting a replacement. Only one ding that is obvious, probably goes with a few other scrapes that I've done over the years.

Hail damage is the only stat write off that can be repaired. New bonnet, roof etc.
If you have been the only owner you have a better chance of getting it back prior to auction.  A bit of time but well worth it if you want it back.
Check the RMS site as it has a detailed list that explains what is required.
Hope it helps,
mickd
