Just a quick question to confirm I've got this right from things I've read. Reading of USB sticks is supported in the i30 upon the following conditions:

1) Drive is formatted FAT32
2) Drive works upto 32Gb possibly more?
3) The directory structure can only be one level deep?

Can someone confirm that these are correct? Trying to set up a USB stick for when I collect an i30. Got a long way to drive, and want to ensure I've got plenty of music to listen to on the way back

I just bought a 16gb USB stick and drag and dropped my music folders into it (in most cases either just a folder of best ofs or in albums) ..

What you are asking relates more to hard drives.. 16GB wil hold nearly 3000 MP3's ripped at 128 kbps - that should cover most trips...

You can still access files more than one level deep, but they don't sort properly. I just have mine configured so that there's one folder for each genre/artist/whatever. The interface in the i30 makes it nice and easy to surf around the folders to find what you want. I also tweaked my folder names to make sure they look nice on the screen, but then I have too much time on my hands...

whats the limitation here? I too have yet to build a my usb drive for the i30, should I stick to some maximum no of characters for folder names or some other limitatiom to make it look ok on the display?

for the record i had a 2G stick in my festiva with maybe 2 - 300 songs?. found that plenty for my 8 hour drives.
i'll probably get another stick for Snow just to pad it out a little....maybe splurge to an 8GB
i rip around 256 kbps.

Depends what you are listening to.
My kids listen to some crap (they call it music) that wouldn't sound good at even 100Mbps...   I think 128 kbps would actually improve it.

Most of what I download from the net is 128 kbps I have ripped at 256 but don't think the speakers in the SLX show up much difference between the two...

i listen to most of my music on headphones i guess so i want a pretty good bitrate, and stuffed if i'm ripping everything twice 

to be honest i do hear a difference between 128 and 256. but the difference between say 192 and 256 is pretty non existant and comes down to how it was ripped mostly. a good rip at 192 is great. 128 is too low by any account for my personal taste.


i'm yet to try out the stereo, have had the radio on just in the background. will pop in  a couple cd's and usb stick over the weekend and play with the settings. i do hope its good enough *crosses fingers*

I have loads of stuff with VBR, do we know if the i30 copes with variable bit rate?

Copes with all rates that I've tried. I rip to VBR but settle for 320/256 off downloads. I believe the player also copes with .WMA but I've not tried those filetypes

Thanks. I'm going to have to get myself a cheap stick and download from my player. I might disguise the stick as something else so I can just leave it plugged in all the time (as the port is on show in the Czech cars).

There is a maximum number of characters that will be displayed in the Folder section of the display, although the track name will scroll so it's less important how many characters the name has. Unfortunately Crystal is in a million pieces at the moment so I can't count how many there are. 

I find 128kbps sounds rubbish in my car, I stick to at least 256. Most of my stuff I ripped from my CDs using WMP and I find it the best of all. I use a 32GB stick. The one that comes with the car looks nice lit up with the i30 logo, but 1GB? puh-leeze.

You can get sticks that look like other stuff - pretty sure I saw one that looked like an apple once - there's not many people who would break in to your car to pinch an apple!

Most of my music is stored on my Nokia E63 on a 16Gb micro sd card.  Should I just be able to plug into the usb port and control the music using the controls on the radio, or do I need to the my phone?

Is there a Hyundai branded usb cable....if so, what are the benfits?

i tried 80gb (FAT32) laptop hdd and works well. down side is whenever you turn off your i30, the audio system wont play the last song in the hdd and starts all over again on your next drive.

The only thing that benefits from the genuine cable is the ipod. If you use the genuine one it will let the head unit control the ipod. So you never need to pick it up to change song.
