can i upgrade the headunit for a 3rd party better one in my car? 

i was told years ago i cannot but think i found a double din plastic cover thing.

Yes you can. I'd get some quotes from local Car Audio shops and also check out Ebay. You will need a new double din surround as you suggested. Search our site or browse the relevant section of our Modifications area to get some inspiration.
