I noticed I was getting what seemed to be a wheel balance vibration in my 2013 i30, it has the stock rims (not mags).
So I took it for a wheel balance and alignment 2 days before Christmas.
That seem to lessen it, but within 2 weeks it was back as bad as ever, so as the tires that were on the car were a little chipped I replaced to front 2, rebalanced etc etc, they move the 2 old wheels from the front to the back and put new ones on the front.

Still no better, but the vibration seem to come from the back, so I just ended up replacing all 4 tires, the vibration is still there.
It feels like every wheel is unbalanced, you feel it from underneath you, but depending on the speed it seems to be stronger on different wheels, more so the front. (60 - 80km you notice it big time)
I don't get steering wheel wobble when driving in a straight line, but at certain speeds turning left I get a slight one intermittently.

When the guys had it up they didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. and they took it for a short drive, but the road wasn't smooth, so they claim they didn't notice it, don't know how because it's driving me nuts.

I'm at a loss on what to do next, I've only had the car 6 months, it drove perfectly up until the beginning of December where I first started noticing the wheel balance steering wheel wobble/vibration, car only has 64,000km's on it and was regularly serviced.

Car doesn't idle rough, and is quite when idling.

Any ideas?

How sure are we of the distance only being 64000K? Discounting the distance because what I'm thinking I would not expect at hose K's but could you have a worn driveshaft in the joints?

I've noticed on the FD diesels that the longest shaft inner joint wears, the boots get a bit loose and grease escapes. A driveshaft out of balance will transmit through the chassis, not the steering in my experience.

Check the shafts, see if anything abnormal or evidence grease escaping is all I can think of at the moment.

Probably should of said 64,000 kilometers  :)
I noticed today it was happening when I was accelerating in 3rd gear around 60km/h, I'd accelerate, the vibration would increase, I take my foot off the accelerator it wouldn't be as bad..

There is a service due soon, so I'll bring it up again when I have that done, but they didn't notice anything visual when I first took it in for the problem and the tires were replaced.

This is a FWD petrol model.

If it's exaggerated under load or acceleration and not necessarily speed then driveshafts is where's I'd look.  I've experienced this a few times now and what you describe fits the bill. In all instances it's the inner joint.

I'm guessing a rather expensive repair.

When paying someone else..always

however it would appear money has been spent with no change. Unfortunate.

Replacing the whole shaft with something aftermarket or a known good low k unit. Stab I'd say $400

We are jumping the gun , the cheapest repair is one that is correctly diagnosed the first time.

Engine mounts also may be a possibilty. You could certainly have a peep at those shafts yourself for any grease escaping

Good point.
I can't see what'd you would call a lot of seeping grease.

Took a couple of photos if that helps.

This is the left side, that's the side it feels like its mainly coming from:

Can't make anything out except outer boot is healthy, inner joint in darkness. Really should be no grease escaping. Is the left shaft the longest of the 2?

No it's the shorter one, the drivers side is the longest.

It's so strange the vibration resonates from the back and front of the car, alone with some steering wobble when turning left, not going straight or turning right.
It's defiantly more noticeable when accelerating, and more so going up a hill, bumpy roads mask the vibration like it's not there, semi smooth roads makes it easier to feel.

I first thought after the tire replacements it could be a slightly bent rim, but wouldn't you just feel it in the one wheel as well as it being picked up during a wheel balance.

We have to assume that the wheel balances etc have been done properly.

only left wheel wobble on turn does not lead me to drive shafts and esp at only 64K

Being left side it could be gutter damage.

Jack the car up, physically move the wheels. look for run out / bent sub axle / tie rod play etc/ lump in tyre..

Swap wheel L to R, see if wobble stays L or moves R = bent rim/ crook tyre etc.

Doubt it is the tyre Lester Gary. Think they have all been replaced.  :undecided:

It's a mystery and driveshafts like Gary says at that mieage unlikely unless of course a boot has been damaged and the grease has escaped or the true distance is greater but looking at the  shot underneath it's looking pretty good soo... :crazy1:

There's an answer somewhere. Also generally when I 've had shaft issues the longest shaft is the one that starts to go out of balance with worn joints.

anyway, best I can think of without bum in seat of car

So rude

Like Gerard , Im doing best guesses without bum on seat.

A bad new tyre is possible but unlikely. Lets make sure!

If tyre was balanced it should be ok, but I have been caught in the past by a crook machine.

On the matter of drive shaft failure, you will usually hear the CV chatter a bit when car is turned on a hard lock.
