Hello all,

I'm new to the Hyundai world and don't know very much about cars, but this seems like a good place to find information :D

The timing chain in my i30 (2012, 1.4 Petrol) was stretched and was recently replaced by an indy mechanic. The car runs fine as far as I can tell, but there is now a whirring noise when accelerating that wasn't there before. I've looked online and some sources say that the timing chain is too tight, though the mechanic doesn't seem worried about it.

Is such a noise a problem? I've also read conflicting information on whether or not this is normal and will resolve itself, as if the new timing chain needs to "settle" but I'm worried that the mechanic is being dismissive.

I'd be grateful for any thoughts on this, thank you!

What mileage was on the car when replaced.

How was the issued identified/ caused the chain to stretch.

My understanding is the chain is designed to last the life of the car and doesn't need replacing not like the old 2l petrol and diesel which were the only i30 which had a belt.

Hi eye30, the mileage was around 82k when it was replaced and the issue was identified by engine misfires and losing power when trying to pull off.

Here is a picture of the chain before replacing.

And a picture of the replacement
