Our 2012 FD SLX wagon is on its last legs. It's not really worth spending money on any more, but I couldn't sell it with a clear conscience in its current condition.
It's done ~245,000kms.
It's on its second turbo already, the turbo was replaced with a new genuine Garrett 65,000kms ago, and now the turbo has shaft play and sounds like a siren.
I'm thinking that for the cost of a turbo (~$1300 new), I could probably buy an engine?
Anyone tried just replacing the CHRA? Not sure if this is viable for a VVT turbo, due to the calibration required.

I've read a few posts on engine swaps, but not seen any successful outcomes.
There are numerous other issues with the car now.
- Odd vehicle shake a 60-80km/h under acceleration. Changing engine mounts helped a little. Could be a driveshaft issue? It's not balance/alignment.
- Bad injector or pilot injection, injector calibration. Bad diesel engine knock 2500-3000rpm.
- Trans has already been repaired once due to flare in 3rd. Replacement drum and clutch pack.
- Its just old and tired
