Steering clonk - who's got it?

There are a few topics on steering and some probably cover this point but I'm starting a new thread to cover specifically the click-clack or clonk-clonk when rocking the wheel back and forth when turned about 45 degrees either to the left or right.

The fact that it is dependant on the correct angle suggests to me it is (as someone already reported) the universal joint in the (lower) articulation of the steering column.

I had my car serviced today and was told that "they all do it" and it won't be fixed under warranty unless it got "a lot worse".

I was surprised at this response quite frankly as I see it as a defect if for no other reason that it did not do it from new and is distinctly audible and can be felt at parking speeds.

I wonder how many others have this condition and if so is it something you would just overlook?

 As an aside, it really isn't a good idea to try to turn the steering while your car isn't moving as it puts a hell of a strain on everything.

Shambles had this I think, amongst others. It might not be the problem here of course.

This was my first thought but my (first) dealer discounted this because I was also outside the VIN number range.

I'm onto my second service department and am no further along after 12+ months. It's not a big deal but I still think it's worth pursuing.

I'm more than happy to have any of you diagnose it but really I just wondered how many have it... and perhaps didn't even realise it.

Thanks for testing... :goodjob:

I didn't want to ignore this good advice and wholey agree. However, try and tell that to the masses whom can turn the wheel with ease at any speed. Car manufacturers must surely take this into account.

I prefer that this OT is terminated here.  Having said that, I think that is a wonderful topic in itself that might be started in a new thread: Motoring ignorance!

I'll start that in General...

They do in so far as there is an EPS (motor) over-heating cutout.

TSB HFE08-61-P020-FDHD

This TSB is only for early Korean Built cars.. FD not FDe

We probably replace 1 or 2 Lower CV joint shafts a week for this noise.. Push your dealer to replace or contact Hyundai Customer services and complain, as it is "potentially" a safety issue as it is related to the steering..

This isn't related to TSB HFE08-61-P020-FDHD ?

Mine is definitely showing this now that I am juddering over the ice clad roads, guess I need to pluck up the courage to visit my scratchific dealer :faint:

I get a slight clonk from the steering when manoeuvring the car at slow speeds but I have a Czech built I30 which isn't applicable to the TSB.  At the first service my wife took in the car and told the garage but they said they couldn't hear it. I guess we have another 4 years warranty to sort it if it becomes more noticeable.

My build is later than those affected according to the TSB.

Funky, I assume you mean UJ not CV joint? I was asked to comment on my 30k service and mentioned that I was unhappy to be fobbed off re this noise. No response to date... but I'm going to keep pushing the UJ as a possible cause.

Not sure that the coupling is the issue now, I and a few other members have found that the rack mounting bolts have come loose, once tightened all noises and 'slack' goes away.

Pip
There seems to be more than one cause and perhaps the symptoms are different.

In my case the rack has been replaced and the mounting bolts were since retensioned (yesterday). Neither of these things made any difference at all.

Yeh, Sorry I meant U/J not CV... Doh..

Havent come across insecure Steering rack bolts on the i30 yet.. However the Santa Fe (CM) is another story!! LOL

Pip

Funky, are you able to say why the UJs are faulty? It could hardly be worn out in such a short time. Surely?

I also wondered why my virtually new rack would need replacing but must admit I did decide it improved the steering float dead ahead and frightening rattle over corrugations, even though it was suspected to be this clock-clonk cause at the time.
