Conversion: 5-Inch Radio to 8-Inch (CarPlay) Radio
I replaced the existing 5-inch radio in my 2018 Hyundai i30 with the larger 8-inch radio (featuring CarPlay/Android Auto). I followed information from two forums, but these only provided key points. Now that the conversion was successful for me, I wanted to create a detailed guide covering the entire process.
The reverse camera and steering wheel buttons continue to function normally with the new radio.

i30 PD 2017 - infotainment: 5 inch to 8 inchA. Instructions
1. Modifying the Wiring Harness
The wiring harness listed below must be modified according to the wiring diagram. Once complete, I recommend wrapping it with electrical tape for additional protection in the vehicle.
2. Connecting the Wires
The two cables listed under "Parts List 1." should be connected using the coupling from "Parts List 7." Once connected, secure the cables with duct tape or similar to prevent disconnection.
3. Removing the Old Radio
The dashboard trim must be removed to access and remove the radio. You can find YouTube tutorials on how to do this.
4. Installing the New USB Port
To install the new USB port, you must remove the gear shift panel trim.
For manual transmission: The trim is not screwed in and can be removed by pulling firmly.
For automatic transmission: I am unsure how this process works.
Additionally, the gear shift boot must be removed. This is also not screwed in—simply pull firmly on the gear knob cover to detach it.
⚠️ Important:
When reassembling, ensure that the gear shift boot’s inner guide is rotated 90 degrees to the left so that the reverse gear lift mechanism works correctly. The best way to understand this is to examine the gear shift and the boot's internal guide—the parts must fit together like a key and lock.
Once the new USB port is installed:
Connect one end of the USB cable to the rear side of the USB port.
Route the other end up to the back of the new radio.
The radio has a dedicated USB input port.
5. Connecting the Wiring Harness
The new wiring harness must be connected to the vehicle's wiring.
The available space behind the dashboard is tight, so push the cables slightly backward before inserting the radio.
⚠️ Be careful: The new radio fits more tightly than the old one. Do not force it in, as this may damage cables. This step requires patience and precision.
6. Final Assembly
Connect the new radio to the wiring.
Reassemble everything securely.
