Last night, 5:30 pm, my lad had just picked up his takeaway and as he drove back home he was stopped by the boys in blue.

Foe a stop you have to be committing a moving traffic offence and just his bad luck one of his tail lights was out.
Didn't know governor was his reply and he didn't.  Honest.

OK a valid reason.

Anyway they asked where he had just been and had he been drinking.

Takeaway and No.

No alcohol on breath but insisted he was breath tested    ---- of course negative and they knew this would be the case.

They told him that here on Merseyside they had started the seasonal drink campaign early and he was the 1st one to be stopped.

Just a warning for our other UK members --- your force may also be starting early..

Tail light out?

Should have been jailed :P

Seriously, it's a good idea. Random checks. I'm all for them...

At least in Oz they don't have to witness an offence to stop and test you.
Up here they sometimes (maybe twice a year) allocate dozens of police and completely block the Highway for several hours, generally at night, testing everyone.
What shits me is they continue to catch people.

They used to do random checks around here (Blackpool, UK) - though they were disguised as tyre or road tax checks. Road block with a number of cars directed to check area - where the officers would smell your breath at the same time as the other checks.

They did lots of them around 7 to 8:30 in the morning - and would have special court sessions booked for the following day to ban drivers who had had a few the night before.

Around the millennium both me and a friend were both randomly stopped (separately) when driving home from the pub at 11:30 at night. I was okay, having just had a couple of drinks over three hours, mate wasn't so lucky. I asked why I had been stopped and the copper says 'Your car was wandering over the road' - which was absolute bollocks. He'd pulled out behind me and followed for a mile and I was doing spot on 30 so he was suspicious. My mate was apparently stopped to check his road tax, lol.

I don't mind random checks, won't make any difference really.

What should really shit you is that it is like shooting fish in a barrel.....Especially in areas like the City, Valley and Surfers on weekend nights. 1 in 10 is not unachievable, not small readings either.

Seems with cabs being so expensive, and work licences so easy, its worth the risk.

What the police here do very often is the early morning random breath tests say 05.00 to 08.30 and get quite a lot of people going to work after a heavy night on the turps.

I wasn't shitty at the police for catching people. I was shitty at people for continuing to drink and drive when they know they're going to get tested sooner or later. And perhaps even more telling is the fact that the people who do this still seem to think they've been victimised. Lock 'em all up I say.

Last year I was tested at the same place mid morning, three days in a row. Whilst it's a minor annoyance I always remember that it's helping keep some idiot off the road who could be coming towards me.
It's a bit like airport security I guess. I don't care how invasive they get as long as I can get on a plane and feel reasonably secure in the knowledge it's not going to blow up en route.

I gave up drinking and driving because I had difficulty holding the glass and steering at the same time.  Got most of the liquid down my front

Quote
A blonde and a brunette were talking one day. The brunette said that her boyfriend had a slight dandruff problem but she gave him "Head and Shoulders" and it cleared it up.
With a confused look on her face, the blonde asked inquisitively, "How do you give soulders?"

You've a typo in there :P

I wasn't suggesting you were. Just suggesting if you knew the full extent of the problem you would be even more shitty.

No worrries beerman. I've spent most of my life in SE Qld with a 14 year stint in Sydney. Grew up on the Goldie. I do have a fair idea of the extent of the problem, through contacts in the motor industry and emergency services over the years.
