been back to dealer and " in all My years in dealing with car , these are stone chips".. yer right, im still not happy with the reply so getting an assecessor to have a look... see what u  think......

the problem starts off in a few stages

1. a little black spot appear under the paintwork

2. a little black spot grows with a ring around it

This is under the badge yes on the boot

3. little black spot rises up and breaks off leaving alarge indentation which has an appearance of a stone chip like hole

Re under the badge - Do you do a lot of reverse driving . What a load of %^%$£&^

To me and I'm no expert just an ordinary joe public, I think it looks like a problem when the paint was done at the factory.

It appears as if the base metal had a few specks of dust and the paint hasn't bonded.

Ask dealer to refer your problem to HY UK as you want it referred to an independent specialist or you will seek advice from Trading Standards

There is no way on earth that can be classed as stone-chips, even if it was happening on the front bumper!!

Can you not take it to another dealer or even a local panelshop/painter for another opinion?

Definitely a fault, which should be recitified under the terms of the body warranty, which like the clearcoat problem may have to be by replacement vehicle

I would also try Hy customer service on this one, your dealer sounds like an utter bar steward.

Stone chips on the rear. Really novel. Happens to everyone

No assessor on God's good earth would say those paint chips were as a result of an impact.

Keep us posted Ray

Not good Ray .. I'm hopeful of a happy ending if you are persistent ..

I would do as Brian has suggested and get an opinion from a local (reputable) body repair shop as well.. even if it costs you a few bucks to get their opinion in writing.. But be persistent (the longer you let them fob you off the harder it will be to get it sorted)

On the other hand try not to get too stressed ('cause that won't help anyone)

Just hang in there no matter how frustrating or disappointing it is.. :'(

Yes.  My 3 month old Czech built /UK supplied i30 in red is similar - with "dull" paint at top of boot lid shut between hinges.  I am not worried about that.
However .... I am curious to know (have meant to check showroom cars) about inside door bases .......... as mine have grey primer (albeit lacquered I think) grinning through that can be seen from below.
Rest of the paint finish on my car is really good indeed (for now at least as HUK don't do mud flaps as yet for these 2011 spec cars).
Regarding your paint - you should take it back and nag until sorted.  If you need moral support you may even get that from RAC as we get some membership (now 5 years) with the car.
It might be possible to get stone chips on back of the car as there will be a vortex type effect that swirls air flow, albeit the back window does not get as dirty as it might on a wet day (ie as with some other hatchback cars).

here's the up date...an assessor from Hy UK has seen the car and said that some of the marks ARE stone chip ( but couldn't explain the ones on the side or the boot)  but there are some marks that has raised his concerns and is getting an independent paint specialist to look at the car, and has reported his concerns to customer services...i have to keep a report on the ones he is interested in

Hi all., Just let you all know  the up date that i have regarding the paint problem..

After battling which seemed ages with the dealer, an accessor had a look and agreed there may be a paint issue but referred it to an independent paint specialist,,

well today they (Indy paint spec'l) had a look and agreed there is a BIG problem re guarding the under coat which is bubbling though the paint work... their verdict is to completely strip the car back to bare metal and re zinc and respray and send the bill to Hyundai, This could be costly or it could be cheaper to get a new car out of it ....hope its the latter....

Stone chips my a**

i thank everyone who help me and given me support from this wonderful site , YOU guys are the best

 Hippo

The whole car or the tailgate?

If it's the whole car that must be one hell of a job, and would presumably involved using paint-on zinc primer as the original stuff is applied using electrolysis to the individual panels. In that case I'd be looking for a replacement car.

If it's just the tailgate that needs the radical fix then you could try telling them to order a new one.

the whole car needs to be striped down to bare metal as the problems are all over the car now,   how the process works i don't know but its going to be resray-ed (re-zinced) using Mitsubishi paint system, (if it goes that way).. and still carry the 10yrs Hy warranty, (which made me laugh, 10 yr, didn't even last 6 mths ).. still yes a result

Ouch - I am so sorry to hear about this paint issue Hipposniper.
Can I throw an inocent (maybe ignorant) spanner in the works?  If the problem is with some primer system that is failing, and they recoat the top of the car (and lets presume it is all a perfect and wonderful favtory finish) - then what about all the other primer that is under the car and inside the car?  My assumption is that primer will be failing in a similar manner and may result in premature corosion.
May I suggest that you at least ask the question?
Very best of luck.

thanks i shall ask that question, as far as i know all the paint is going to be striped, didn't think to ask if the inside and under the  it to be done as well................ would all this respraying etc devalue the price of the car. if so do i have a right to ask for a new car

That is an awful story Hipposniper and I'm sure it would stress anyone out to the max, some people may even have buckled under and perhaps thought ... I'll just have to live with it ?

That is one major job and not to mention the upheaval and inconvenience to you, Surely this would come under your UK 'Lemon' laws that would cover replacement ? ..... I would be shouting but still being reasonably polite to the top C.E.O person of Hyundai UK ..... "Please give me a replacement car NOW" .... Lets face it this is not good publicity for the Hyundai product and you've told the loyal Hyundai i30 owners through out the world about your paint problems and the shirking of a major defect by Hyundai.

I would like to see a post from you saying it's okay now Hyundai UK have agree to replace my vehicle and this would be good for all of us and go a long way to restoring our faith in Hyundai manufacturing paint techniques.

I hope this is resolved for you soon Hipposniper ... Good luck mate  :)

From what Rocket says you may very well end up with a better car after the respray than you had before. I would keep a copy of all the correspondence you have in a safe place and if you ever get any bad feedback of your car as a trade in (e.g. a reduced trade in price due to the respray) refer it straight back to Hyundai UK for some compo.

Unless they absolutely bend over backwards with offers of loan cars etc etc. I would nicely but firmly be pushing for a replacement as the first option.

what ever, if  Hyundai say they can only respray the car, i shall be looking for compo, and defo need a temp car while they do it as i need to get to the firestation,, but yes i shall be trying my hardest for a new car as it has devalued my car after a respray

Although im only 22 almost 23 iv been in the paint trade since i was about 15 (started helping my uncle with prep work) and i was fully trained as a sprayer by the age of 17. I then went onto special repair specialising in water based paints and became mercedes certified.

Now you have a little background on me heres my 2 pence worth. A stone chip is caused by just that. A stone hitting the paint and damaging it, However your damage looks like its starting between the primer and basecoat in the pain. That to me suggests poor prep work, or a number of other problems relating to how it was painted. If the car was baked at too high a temp there is a chance the water which should have time to evaporate may not have and becomes sealed under the lacquer this leads to "sinkage" or "Pot Holes" or "Blistering" all of which start as a tiny blemish and ultimately lead to pain falling off. In my proffessional opinion i would put money on the sprayer/prep work being at fault. That does not look like stone chips to me. I have never seen stone chips like that. Ofcourse i cant say 100% without seeing it in person but i would say im 99% sure its something like i mentioned above as it can also happen with solvent paint. Either way i would say it should be dealt with by the dealer.
