So I Modified one of the big light fittings in Trish's Train Room and tested before reinstalling .. Worked first time (so I will try and do the other 3 doubles over the weekend.

That's great news Dazz.  I need to replace the fluros in my shed with LEDs.  Luckily they are all singles (6 of them).  This thread will be a great help.

That's a good thing, means you're producing the same light output now for a fraction of the cost.

I'll post a picture of the modified double wiring and the comparison of the modified one and the standard one shortly!

Not quite sure why singles only need the starter removed (certainly a lot easier than having to remove the ballast!)

I shall be removing the ballasts - I hate the bloody things.  :censored:

I took a quick picture of the 1200mm double after I tested it with a plug on the end .. Probably a bit hard to see but certainly a lot less in there than when I started..

and here is the fitting back up with LEDs in (the blue cast isn't evident to the naked eye) !

Anybody considered removing the redundant fluorescent fitting completely, and using maybe a modified end cap to support, (and/or "Terry" clips and a terminal block - if preferred), then connect one end of each tube to mains power.

I guess that is pretty much what I have done Mike (isn't it?)

Yes, the only reasons for continuing the use of the "metal spine" is either to cover the ceiling marks/entry hole or to support the diffuser covers- for single tube with a simple support.
Supporting double tubes and covers present more of a problem :)

Yes, the only reason to continue to use the original end-to-end wiring is because it is there, but I wouldn't go modifying because I'm still Defence mobile and every home is a potential rental. Ideally I'd be adapting the wiring as reversibly as possilble to suit LED. However, Dazz is probably at home among family ( ) and all bets are off. The simplest view is that LED tubes are built to take the 240V AC input presumably by built-in rectfication and series voltage sharing. The starter is something that would actually damage the LED arrangement.

I am going to print stickers to put on the light fittings to say they are modified for LED globes only ... :goodjob:

@ Mike.. Sorry, I see what you mean now!

Easier for me to use the existing fitting modified .. Live to one end neutral to the other and earthed in the middle (how would you earth your setup?)

The fluorescent replacement UK LED tubes I have used, don't require an earth
