This is a design fault.
I have never had a problem with keys like this where both keys brake at the housing... bad design housing material that cracks. I can not call it metal.
This is a design defect that should be rectified by Hyundai unless they think built in redundancy is a good thing?
As such my CRDi 2008 SLX has been good and reliable but keys that break like this is a safety risk especially in a stall situation.
I have never had a key crack up like this in my 45 years of driving many vehicles.  2 keys cracking up at the housing is a design issue!
This may well be an issue for class action as Hyundai appear to be reticent in accepting any responsibility for bad and potentially culpable design.
My previous Hyundai Getz 2004 GL had none of these issues. Just a bent key I straightened with a pliers.
A class action is a gower if we have enough disgruntled consumers in Australia.
let me know theories?

Hi Andrew1m23,

Firstly,  :wttc:

I have only heard of a few breaks in the key, your's being two of them.  I never had a problem with mine when I owned it, nor in other cars with similar keys.  Our i30s at work also get a hammering (as they are SE, Somebody Elses) and the only thing I can see that has gone wrong is a worn out spring in the key.

I think for class action there needs to be an obvious trend in the key breaking, in which case Hyundai would fix it.  Class actions also aren't cheap to do, and what outcome do you want from such an action?  The cost of buying another key, even from Hyundai, would be cheaper than one hour with a good lawyer.

Not trying to stir up trouble, but if you are bending other keys, maybe it is a usage problem?  If the engine is turning over then you don't have to keep turning the key.

I don't think there have been too many issues with the keys.

I have 125,000 on My 2010 I30 and the only issue I have had is with the rubber on one of them. Certainly no key breakage.

The problem is easily fixed....

$11.45 for the key, whatever it costs to cut it, and take the working transponder out of the old key bang it in the new key and there you go.

Cheaper than phoning a lawyer, and as a bonus you don't need to deal with a lawyer....

I think a "class action" is a bit heavy.
The only trouble I have had with one of my keys was wear of the rubber cover on the front of the key body. Hy could not supply the rubber  only and wanted near $450 for a new complete key. I purchased key (without electronics) from ebay for about $10 transferred the rubber cover and all is OK. One can also transfer the key blade and electronics from a broken or bent key, it's simple
Complete keys with electronics are also available for around $50 and somewhere I have read the process to follow to program the electronics in a new key from the ECU. I will search for the paper and post it here if I find it.

That's not for Hyundai's.
That's for the brand Infinity. A luxury off-branch of Nissan. Like Lexus is an off-branch of Toyota.

i have a 2009 i30 my key broke last year at the thin part where it folds into the fob ,stupidly i decided to glue it with super glue as my nearest dealer is 40 miles away and had to go to franchised dealer but wife wanted to use car and did not have time to go,it lasted ok for a month then broke again ,when i went to dealer was told no warranty as i had tried an emergancy repair which i expected them to say and car only had a short time left before 5 year warranty was up ,but this was annoying as no force was ever used and was poor design or poor materials
