First thing I noticed was the rear light cluster and hatch design which is similar to i20.

My present car is a September 2010 i30 1.6 CRDi manual Premium with the 110PS engine and no DSG (an option at the time).

The equivalent car in the new 2012 range would be the 1.6 CRDi manual Style with the 128PS engine and DSG as standard.

The main items I would gain with the new model are :-

16” alloy wheels (instead of my current 17” wheels which I don’t like) Hoorah
LED direction indicators on door mirrors
Chrome exterior beltline trims
Hex grill with twin chrome bars
Rear spoiler with brake light
Auto windscreen de- fog
Dual zone climate control (present car is single zone)
LED running lights
Static cornering head lights
Front windscreen de-icer
12v outlet in boot
Cloth upholstery with mesh design. Present car has leather trim.
Elec one touch windows front & back. Present car has one touch only in front.
Bluetooth connection with voice control
Cruise control with speed limiter (cruise was an option on my car)
Flex steer
Front parking sensors (present car at rear only)
Emergency stop signal
Brake assist
Hill start assist
Temporary spare wheel. Present car has a full size alloy spare.

Some other differences :-
Max engine power is now 94kW @4000 rpm. Present car 85kW @ 4000 rpm
Max torque is now 260Nm @ 1900 rpm. Present car 260 Nm @ 2750 rpm
Acceleration 0 to 62 mph is now 10.9 seconds. Present car 11.5 seconds
Steering turns lock to lock is now 2.85. Present car 2.69
Turning circle is now 5.3 metres. Present car 5.5 metres
O/all length now 4300. Present car 4280
O/all width now 1780. Present car 1775
O/all height now 1470. Present car 1480
Luggage capacity seat up is now 378 litres. Present car 340 litres
Luggage capacity seats down is now 1316 litres. Present car 1250 litres
Kerb weight is now 1386kg. Present car 1395 kg

Urban fuel consumption  mpg (L/100k) is now 67.3 (4.2). Present car 53.3 (5.3)
Extra urban fuel consumption               is now 78.5 (3.6). Present car 68.9 (4.1)
Combined fuel consumption                 is now 74.3 (3.8). Present car 62.8 (4.5)

And now for the REAL difference

On the road price March 2012 £19,295
My car Sept 2010 was             £16,450...........................OUCH

All the HY car marque base prices are all increasing.

They appear to be cashing in on the success they have had over the past few years.
They are no longer regarded as a "cheap" brand but are up there with the likes of Ford, GM, BMW etc

I was looking at changing mine later in the year as 5 years old in Sept but after looking at the new model price I'll be keeping for a few years longer, assuming I get the repairs sort.....

Yeah the price. That's what I had in mind when I was buying current i30. The new is great, no doubt about it, but nothing wrong with current one, especially when considering the price  But hey, gotta compete with other brands..just don't like the prices that much anymore.

It has been said that I might be ever so slightly biased, but there's no question is there

This is my dilemma. I am 75 years old in a few weeks and have decided that my next car will be my last. I don't want to be driving much beyond 80 years old - assuming that I last that long.

I have significant hearing loss and have to use two hearing aids. Holding a conversation in any environment where there is loud background noise is at best difficult, at worst impossible. The present i30 has high levels of cabin noise - even though I changed the tyres to Yokohama decibels which are as quiet as tyres come.  A few months ago I rode passenger in a 1.6 petrol i30 with 16" wheels and was surprised at how much quieter it was compared with my diesel.  Hence a petrol car on noise grounds has to be a consideration.

Add to that, I no longer do many long journeys - possibly once a month. At least 50% of my mileage is around town and I am conscious that it is not good for the DPF which would be very expensive to replace once the warranty expires. An additional service cost worry is if the new diesel has a dual mass flywheel - these have a poor reliability record on most makes.

To compound my misery - I do enjoy the grunt of my present diesel car and its effortless cruise on long journeys. However - if the new car is as noisy as the present one - it rules it out.

I vaguely recall someone here mentioning the 1.4 petrol engine as being a nice unit with better performance than he expected. Was it Bumpkin and his ix20?

I am trying to do a cost analysis of owning the 1.4 petrol versus the 1.6 diesel in the hope that it will produce hard evidence one way or the other. Bearing in mind that :-

The routine service costs for diesel cars tend to be higher than petrol but I lack accurate data for each at present.
Possible DPF and dual mass flywheel repair costs for the diesel.
I reckon that the new diesel should average about 55 mpg (my present one has averaged 48.6 mpg from new).
In the UK - diesel fuel is far more expensive than petrol and the gap is likely to widen.
The 1.4 petrol car will be much more thirsty - but I have yet to find reliable figures for the mpg I can expect.  I have no faith in the official published figures for either car.
The diesel car will be free of car tax - the petrol car will cost £130 p.a. at current rates.
The diesel car commands a much higher insurance rating - hence higher premiums.
The petrol car is £2400 less expensive than the diesel

I might even toss a coin.................... :scared:

PS
If anyone can point me in the direction of some reliable cost data for each car - it would be appreciated

Hi Alan,

Surprised to hear Diesel is that much dearer than unleaded (over here it is the same price or only a few Cents per litre dearer - 10c at the most)

With the 5 year warranty you would be 80 before you would need to worry about the unlikey (but possible) cost of DPF or Flywheel issues..

I think a drive of both will make your decision a lot easier (provided you can find some to drive prior to finalising your purchase)

When i first bought my i30, diesel was cheaper than unleaded.
Now, in Perth it is about 20 cents dearer per litre.  :(

Alan,

My 2010 1.4 is listed at 80kw / 108BHP @ 6200 rpm which is a little more than the new one based on the figures above.

The new one obviously has different mapping, so may have slightly more torque ?

If I need to overtake on country roads I need to get into the higher rev range, though it is more than adequate around town (which is 98% of my driving).

Fuel consumption is around 31 mpg for my town trips, which are mainly 2 miles but which are occasionally 20 miles. I tend to get 40-45 mpg on A roads but going above 70 on the motorway will see it reduce to around 30 again.

It suits me with my low mileage but definitely not for everyone. :)

I don't use the car exclusively to go to supermarkets.  :D I go other places as well. :)

And as for meetings with, err, certain other people - I stongly deny it.  :whistler:

I noticed that the 1.4 gamma engine in the new i30 has the max torque of 137 Nm (only half that of the diesel of course) is at 4200 rpm rather than 5000. Which is a bit better for overtaking, though it would be good to have a graph of this over the rev-band.

As far as the noise, which Alan mentioned, I don't really notice the sound of the engine above the road noise if I'm driving gently. Though it obviously gets noticable if I push the loud pedal.

I think a couple of test drives are needed when it gets into the dealers.

I am surprised you would consider the petrol over the Diesel partly on engine noise grounds .. Our CRDi when warm was great (engine noise wise) as well of in lots of other ways..  :happydance: I would consider that Trish's 2.0 petrol CW is noiser in that way...

I shall not make a decision until I have tried both cars. The dealership will let me use them for a day or two each and I can thus give them a thorough work out. This will include proper sound tests in the cabin using a decibel meter.

As I noted in my earlier post - the petrol car crept under the radar because I rode passenger in a 2 year old 1.6 petrol and thought it quiet compared with my car. Entirely subjective of course - it could have been that my ears or hearing aids were not performing well that day. In addition, the overall cost implications of each are not to be ignored.

I will of course report ny findings here so you can all put in your penny worth before I make a decision.  I'm deaf though............ :whistler:

In reality my 1.6CRDi does 0 to 62 well under 10s , with no wind and on a flat road, as recorded  by my scanguage, with it's latest speed recording firmware update.

Not that I try it very often.

Another interesting road test. I am particularly interested in the comments about refinement and cabin noise.

It is also interesting that British police now recognise the benefits of Hyundai - Ford and Vauxhall are in for a rude shock. It starts in Liverpool..
