Anyone tried this mod?

I had a look tonight at the wiring and just to get an idea how easy or hard this is, took a few pictures.

Here's the connector to the button that turns off the light inside when the door's shut,

The idea was to connect the new lights to this line, which has about 10V, but I dont understand why there is just one line in the connector, and there is always 10V on the line so I dont understand how this button turns the lights off  :|

Maybe it "earths" the wire to the body and completes the circuit once the door switch is open??
Does that make any sense?  Just a suggestion.

i'd have to go with seoul mate on this one... i think it's the earth (-) from the body, and it completes the - circuit when it is "turned on"/doors opened

you're right!

In nearly all cars you’ll find a single wire that leads to the switch. When the door is open the wire is earthed, so completing the circuit and switching on the light

Now I have something to think about.
Thanks.

I thought about this mod too, as our Tucson has lights in the door edges.  At first i thought something was wrong with the globe or wiring in the i30 until i realised it was just a reflector.  i thought it would be cool to adapt a pushbike tail light - the flashing LED ones into it.  Might be a little distracting having it flashing every time you open the door tho.

you have to find a positive. we take the red wire that is the main fat that is on the inside of the door panel.

the negative cable put it in another hole in this photo

just only you have to connect these wires to the bulbs or LEDs.

good luck

Little tip from someone that's played with the door wiring. (Succesfully)
Unless you like pain, don't even think your going to get a wire of any description from the car into the door.
Not without major headaches at least.

The body connector has every single pin wired and installed.
So unless your ready to put serious time into the process stop now.

If you want to proceed, be prepared to completely remove the door from the car.
It'll be faster and easier than doing 'plug mods' with the door still bolted on.

There may be a suitable wire already in the door, test carefully first.

*This applies to the drivers door, I have not played with the other doors as I had no need to*

To those of you still thinking about anything to do with body to door wiring.

Open door fully.
Disconnect rubber wiring boot from door, then body.
Compress (two lock pins) and partially withdraw plug/socket assy from body.
Remove the plastic colar from around the plug/socket assy (colar is in two 'U' shaped pieces).
Fully (haha, have fun) remove the plug/socket assy from the body. (theres about 7cm of spare cable slack in the body).
Unlock and hinge the assy latch on the rear of the plug/socket assy (body side).
This will disconnect the plug from the socket.

Note how every single spot on the body plug is wired and pinned.
Now think very carefully about how your going to get any extra wires though a plug that is already filled to it's limit.

To reassemble you must follow the reverse exactly or you won't get it back in the body.
You also need to be very carefull while trying to put it back into the body hole.
If you are not you may damage the locking lever on the back of the body socket.
I almost did.

Allow for some swearing duing this proceedure.
Oh, and allow loooots of time, it is not something you can rush........

Poking the wire under the lip of the grommet is asking for a moisture leak i reckon.  Must be a better way to do it than that.   Nice look tho - I agree should have been a factory fit in the first place.

I now connected this the way YOSOYPEPO suggested but the light only comes on when the key is in the ignition, that's not what I was hoping for, I rarely enter and exit my car when the key is in the ignition.

What I was hoping for is for the light to come on no matter if the keys are in or not.  :x

So what I need now is to find a wire with 12V all the time.  :x

There is one, BUT, it is in the body socket.
So if you want to use it you will have to get another plug from a wreckers, strip the pins out, and do it properly from the door/body assy.

Although I haven't tested the other pins, It would be interesting to know what the other (spare) wires are in the body plug.
Hint hint.
Anyone with HMC service disc's able to show the door/body wiring ??????

try with another positive wire

I did, there are two other 12V wires in the door, but they dont allow me to hook a circuit to it.

I designed a LED circuit that uses 12V, then I connected it to one of this wires, and the voltage dropped to 8V, so there must be some kind of a current limiter on that line. And the LEDs arent bright at 8V, because I designed the circuit for 12V.

I still dont understand why your red wire is always 12V, I talked to a mechanic and he says that theres no way a constant 12V is in the door, that means you can power the windows and use all the buttons when the cars off, and that should never be possible.

grrrrrr, why are there so many versions of this car  :'(

No  :'(

You need one of these - strip each wire 5mm, 1 by 1, and test their charge as you go, while the door is open. Make sure you wrap your stripped area with electric tape after each is checked.

If you don't have one, you could buy a voltmeter like in Yoso's mod thread, and once you have your wire you can then install that next to your lighter like he did :D

??? Um, only if the windows are connected to it? Which they wouldn't be? Your mechanic... /slap him.

Question me this:
When your rearview-mirror-light is on "Door", does it not turn on when any door is opened?
It turns on when the button thingy (real technical, aren't I?) isn't depressed. You should be able to connect your light to the same wire that goes to that button (which isn't necessarily in the door, it can be in the frame - I don't have my i30 to check :'( ).
Some cars have alarms that activate if you purely pull the handle without turning the alarm off - those cars would have to have active wires in the door - but that wouldn't help us because turn off the alarm and I would assume that would deactivate that wire's charge :P

If you haven't gotten an answer in 3 or 4 weeks when I have mine I'll see what I can find to compare.
