Keyfob battery? Perfectly normal, Kevin :P

I wouldn't have thought the main battery would have that short a life, however.

I'd be pretty shitty if my key fob battery only lasted 2½ years.  :disapp:

As for the main battery, they are notoriously  unpredictable as to life span.

Traditionally, they last about a month past whatever warranty period is on them. No. That's just a joke. Especially in the automotive industry.

Seriously, you should get 4 -5 years out of them but the occasional one doesn't go the distance.
When it comes to replacing it, being diesel, don't scrimp on the cost.
And I'd make sure I checked the electricals for charge rate and any possible leakage.

The last thing you need is for the new one to go belly up.

Battery failure after 2.5 years on CRD1. Normal?

hasn't just gone flat? try putting it on a proper charger, with the calcium/calcium batteries the old school chargers sometimes can't get them charged 100% and my cheap 'automated' one from aldi cant even start charging them when they go past 8V.

try putting a 'Ctek' charger on it and let it go through its cycle 100% if that doesnt work, get a new Yasua/century ect ect OR racq battery, the bonus with the racq/ravc/nrma/raa/aa ect ect battery, 2 year warranty BUT they come out and test it first to see if there is a fault or just needs a charge AND they do the dirty work!

After checking the electrolyte to ensure levels are correct, I hook up a 12v battery in parallel to get the charging process started. It might work, might not.  :Dunno:

Normal? Probably not.
Happens quite often: Probably yes.

Last year the i30 ranked quite poorly in a German breakdown statistic. Main reason were the high amount of failing batteries. (However the winters in Germany are of course much harder than in Australia and cool temperatures are a factor in battery aging)

My CRDi turns 6 years old in December. Still on the original battery at 192.000 km

Do you run a lot of short distances..? ..if so, maybe a recharge can do it.

My previous car, a 1993 Nissan Primera, was 11 years old before the factory fitted battery gave up.  :goodjob2:

My guess is that batteries in the GD i30 with ISG (engine stop and go) could well have a shorter life because they are called on to start the engine much more often.

The batteries fitted are reputed to be designed for the harder duty - but I am pessimistic about their life.  We will see.

When I bought my FD it was two years old, had 8100 miles on the clock... and a newish battery.  I think the electrics are the weakest part of the i30s.

Dare I comment on my 2010 CW with 91,500 k passed under the wheels, still on the original battery.

But I have seen a few motor shots on I30s with less k's than mine on Carsales where the original battery has gone......

ISG models are fitted with AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries, and those ones used by the factory haven't been top quality. That could also be the main reason of problems with ISG not working as expected. If you have to replace the battery, get a good quality one.

I live in the land of harsh winters, so I will definitely need good battery (and engine block pre-heater) to get it started in -30 degrees.  :cold: According to the user manual, the diesel fuel filter seems to have a heater to prevent fuel gelling in severe cold.  :goodjob: I'm also considering to get one of those chargers which will keep the battery full when the car is plugged in for the engine block heater.

I had a bad run with the original battery that was fitted to my 2010 diesel. It was replaced (a bit begrudgingly) under warranty one week shy of my car's first year.

Its replacement is still there and hasn't looked like faltering after 2.5 years of its use.

With many of the newer cars, there are more electrically powered things requiring watts.
I would expect a battery on a new car to cover a minimum of 5 years trouble free motoring - anything less, then you should refer back to your dealer as to what crappy battery they may be fitting as standard ?!

Moderator Dazzler has admitted his crime!  Big smile

The replacement was slightly less amp/hour capacity, sold by the car supplier. So far, so good.

FOBs are both OK since new.
